Flat Pattern Issues

Having problems with a flat pattern being created properly. The part is a derived solid from another part. Both parts are ensured to have matching Sheet Metal Styles. The solid body was made using the contour flange command. Even with a document update and rebuild the flat pattern will still not flatten correctly.

The only way I've found to fix this is to manually delete the flat pattern, and then recreate it, but this isn't really an option for runtime when it needs to be done automatically. There is also a sketch, and an associated punch tool in the flat pattern which would be a hassle to setup in code to recreate every time.

Thanks for any help or guidance anyone can provide!

Can you provide the model files?

I seem to remember some "issues" with the way that sheet metal styles and derived parts are handled by Inventor..

If you can weed through this thread I think this might be a possibility of what you are experiencing..

I didn't have the Material set to "By Sheet Metal Rule". Hopefully this will resolve the issue.

Thanks! I'll keep this thread updated if I notice any further issues. Sometimes it likes to work, sometimes not.

Hi,

if you find issues, please post them here. I'll be monitoring the thread and hopefully be able to either explain the behavior or fix it.

Thanks,

Gerald

Do you receive any error messages?  How could anyone help you without seeing the part you're working on?  Post the part here and tell us what version of Inventor you're using-- I'm sure someone can provide an answer.

Some of the possible reasons:

  • The part is modeled such that it is not uniform thickness
  • The part is deformed in more than one direction (stamped)
  • The Sheet Metal Rule's thickness does not match the model's thickness
  • There is no Rip in a closed loop piece

Hi! This is a geometry specific behavior. Please share the file here. There should be a logical reason to explain why the flat pattern fails.

Many thanks!
