Fillet weld Previews but fails

If I have a gusset on a "T" type connection, I can get the fillet weld to preview the weld, but as soon as I apply it, it fails.

 

Look at the images below to better see the issue.

 

The work around I had to do was apply a chamfer at the heel of the gusset, and then apply weld all around the vertical plate. Then apply (2) other welds on the (3) faces of the vertical leg of the weldment, and then again for the bottom leg. The final images displays the final result.

 

I was hoping i could just weld around the base of the vertical plate and around the base of the gusset at the same time, then apply the one weld to cover the vertical leg of the gusset.

Sorry for not listing info, but I have tried this on a few releases and was hoping it was going to be fixed in 2017.

 

I am running 2017, and the files are attached.

Also, I cannot seem to find a way to represent a plug weld. I have exhausted all my knowledge, any ideas?

 

My work around would be make a part that will fit into the plug section, make it reference, then do a radial groove weld from the inside face of the hole to the outer surface of my new reference part, then just make the reference part say .0001 dia. so then it appears as a plug weld.

Not a problem, the gusset I sent may have the chamfer on the back, so just remove that of course. I applied that so I could weld all around the vertical plate leaving clearance for the weld.

Make a plane through the weld pocket and split the face. Then use a groove weld, full face to full face.

 

P.S.  You should probably post this as a new thread, as others may benefit from searching for the specific problem.

Good point, I never thought of that. In regards to both splitting the face of the hole, and making a new thread.  I just had my blinders on and was focusing strictly in the weldment environment and not thinking outside the box.

Works fine for me too, only thing I noticed there are three welds in the original post and you (and I) have done it with two. I'm guessing this is why the failure occurs with the the OP.

I've attached the Weldment.iam that has the welds.

The only thing I see in the video is that you still have the chamfer on the heel of the gusset. If I do it with the chamfer there it works, but if you remove the chamfer and do it again it fails, at least on my end. That is why when I sent the files I suggested to remove the chamfer. Because when I sent the files I realized it had the chamfer in it, and the first picture does not show the chamfer.

It is possible to weld this fully without the chamfer but you need an extra weld. I have attached a zip with the Weldment.iam and the gusset.ipt with the EOP rolled up above the chamfer.

I understand what you are saying, that is the work around I have done in the past. That is also why I placed the chamfer in the back to account for that weld. I don't mean to come across the wrong way, but the post was not "how do I fully weld this..." It was just pointing out the unusual behavior of the preview of the weld in one condition and works, but not in another. The weld should only require (2) welds, one around entire base including the gusset, then the one ton the vertical leg of the gusset.

 

I do appreciate your assistance and time looking into this. Like I say, I don't mean to come across rude.

Yep, that's fine. I completely understand where you are coming from. I've struggled with weldments previously and only use the environment now when I really need to.

In my opinion it should be much more tolerant of how welds are placed etc.
