Fill/hatch

I am a new user, and I am having problems using the hatch feature. The icon is on the screen, but it is not active, even in the sketch mode. Is this considered to be an add in that I need to download, or am I just trying to use the tool wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can you post a .jpg of what aper on your screen, it might help better understand the problem. A quick guess will be that you don't have any line created. What do really want to accomplish.

Welcome newuser

Here is a picture of what is on the screen. I am trying show different surfaces on the part, and I need the hatching on the faces to be different.

Did you put that tool there?
I believe that tool is for the idw environment not the ipt environment. In the idw you would need a close sketch boundary to use the tool.
The bigger question is why are you trying to hatch the ipt sketch? (and a 3d sketch at that???)

Hatch works in Drawings... IDW. To show IPT faces in a different color,
select the face RMB and select properties.

How are you going to 'show' the surfaces? Are you going to make a manufacturing drawing, or are you going to do a screen grab/dump to a printer/bmp file?

Thank You for all of the input. I didn't realize you could just change the properties of the surfaces.

Thank You again

You can change by part (upper right in screen) by feature (RMB on feature in browser) and by face (as you've found out RMB on face).

If I have it in the .idw file how do I create a boundary to fill?

My first question would be, why, as there might be a better way.
But...
Click on the view, hit s on the keyboard. Project geometry, RMB Done (and add any lines, arcs if the projected geometry doesn't give the close boundary you need). Then you should be able to fill.
If you have trouble, zip and post an example idw.

Here is an example I use.
Inventor does literal sections, but traditional practice is to not hatch thin webs. No problem. Hide the Inventor hatch, create custom boundary as needed and hatch that. Same as ACAD.

How do you create the custom boundaries. This is what I have.
