Do you have tips that can help make extruding not a nightmare? There seems to often be issues where I have to spend 30 or more minutes trying to find the problem. I'd love to take a course but I don't see anything on this issue.

A big problem I'm having right now is I have a sketch that I'm able to extrude, but I can't extrude a new sketch on top of it that I projected the geometry.

I really like inventor in many ways and I've gotten used to it, but the time I'm spending on trying to get extrudes to work is urging me to try another software. I'm hoping something helps me get past this.

Hi, many times it is not necessary to project this sketch on another plane to reuse the geometry. You can reuse the same sketch over and over again!
If the sketch is consumed by a feature you must first share this sketch, select it and with the right click you select as shown in the image

0.jpg

Then create an extrusion select the contour you need

1.jpg

Up to here you will extrude from the same sketch as usual. Change the distance box and select "Distance from face".

2.jpgNow you can choose an existing face on your body, or a workplane that you created and extrude from this location.

With regard to your initial question, I think it would be safest for you to convert an entity, perhaps a small rounding into a corner, or a minuscule entity, so Inv does not allow you to select a closed contour because it is not closed.
I hope this helps with your problem. regards

Here is absolutely positively without doubt and undeniably the best tip that I can give you.

Ready for it?

Attach file here that you are having trouble with Extruding.

I use Inventor, SolidWorks, Creo, AutoCAD, Fusion 360... … what other software are you considering?

Hi! Please share the file here. On Inventor 2019 and earlier, the sketch profile is recognized based on sketch constraints. Two crossing lines do not constitute separate profile regions unless there is a coincident constraint. On 2020, the algorithm has been changed to geometry based irrespective of constraints. I guess you are on 2019 or earlier. There are workflows allowing it to work. I also understand it can be frustrating when it does not work.

Please share the files so forum experts can comment further.

Many thanks!

This is an example of problems I see.

I can only extrude the outer perimeter of the first sketch instead of the individual sections. With the second projection sketch, it lets me extrude every section. Usually I can't extrude projection sketches though.

Thank you. That's nice info to know. I don't have 2020.

Hi! This issue is indeed resolved on 2020. On 2019 and earlier, the profile recognition is very weak with patterned or mirrored sketch geometry. Somehow the constraints were not applied in a way that profiles can be recognized. It is unclear to me how to make this particular case work in 2017, except projecting.

Many thanks!
