Exporting a BOM with all parts and subassemblies.

Inventor allows you to create a structured or parts only BOM.  We need a complete parts list for our machines, with both parts AND assemblies.  The problem is that parts only doesn't include assemblies or weldments, and structured doesn't combine quantities from sub assemblies.  There is a tool called BOM extractor that will generate a proper list, but it doesn't include all the iproperties we need.

I'm assuming we aren't the only ones doing this, but I can't seem to find a better way then manually combining the two lists.

Go to the structured tab of the BOM screen..

Press the "View Options" flydown button and select "View Properties"... Change the dropdown there to 'All Levels" then export your bom and done..

That lists parts in different subassemblies separately, see my example.  I need these combined like in parts only, but I need all assemblies also.

Can I ask whats the point of that list? (knowing the end use I may be able to offer up an alternative)

Inventor does not export a "summarized BOM" (summarized = parts only including subassembly part numbers)

You may just have to resort to using the BOM Extractor and then doing a Vlookup in excel to pull the iprops you need from an Inventor export excel file..

We use excel for parts lists for the machines we make.  The parts lists must include everything on the machine.  Is this unusual?

I know this is not answer you're looking for..  But years ago I had an ilogic program that created an indented BOM on Sheet 1 of the excel spredsheet, sheet 2 rolled up all the parts and qtys together, sheet 3 would list all the long-lead items, and sheet 4 would indicate new components that were not in our ERP system..  However I don't work there anymore and I no longer have access to that interface.  Smiley Sad   IN the end you may want to consider something like that if you know how to program.

But I wrote that program because the BOM extractor you are referring to was limited...

Its unusual to me and if it was very common practice Inventor would more than likely have the capability..

Don't you have a drawing set that includes drawings of the machine and drawings for each subassembly too?

That drawing package #1 includes everything on the machine and #2 the parts list is created automatically without any exporting..

We have other departments that do not have or use inventor.  The parts list are used by other people in our company. I don't see how having one parts list for an entire project is unusual.

Its really not crazy at all.. But formatted like you want is just not something that Inventor currently does out of the box..

Many of us have ERP systems that handle all this..Or different procedures

I looked into that, and other third party tools.  But it doesn't export a proper list with all components and correct quantities, just the same "stuctured" or "parts only" formats that inventor does.

I have been looking for the same thing for days now.

There is a macro that was posted that is supposed to dig down into all the assemblies and tally up the cost.

But I have not yet been able to get it to work.

I found this that looks promising

http://www.cbliss.com/inventor/iCode/BomXTractor.htm

You install it and it creates a .exe file in whatever destination folder you install it.

Run it and it will bring up a window were you can browse for your top level assembly

Execute it and it generates an xls file

Look for the indented BOM tab at the bottom of the xls file and that will give you every part and the price

The summary BOM tab will get you the total quantities of each part.

In my case I'm a one man show and I just need to get estimated pricing for projects early on, and now how many bolts and stuff I need to order so I know exactly why you are looking for this.
