Exported iges file errors

Exported iges file errors

I have 3 parts that I am trying to get molded. In Inventor, all surfaces appear solid, and appear as I want them. However, when I export to iges to send over to the molder, I am being told there are multiple errors, and missing surfaces. In order for them to proceed, I need to fix the errors, but I am not even seeing the errors from my end.

Any thoughts?

Thought 1.  Attach your original *.ipt file here for inspection.

Thought 2. Why in the world are you using IGES rather than STEP or Parasolid?

Thought 3. I will make a significant  small wager that I will find errors in logic in your Inventor files.

I have SolidWorks as well - so I can test the conversion.

1) Can do.

2) No clue.

3) I wouldn't take that bet, as I am a physician with no engineering background who has "self taught" himself with trial and error processes. But I would have stuck with the significant wager had you found someone dumb enough to take you up on it. Of note, these files were printable on a lulzbot... if that means anything.

Hi Phil,

I've seen an issue in Chic Shield 3.3, standard size.ipt.

Mis-aligned thread.jpg

Perhaps I'll find more.

Here's next one. Duplicate faces in IGS import.

Duplicate faces in thread.jpg

This error seems to be induced already in the IPT. Sketch20 of Helix1 (Spiral1) is misplaced.

Re-import of 3rd IGS showed no errors, botn with Inventor or Rhino

The history tree reports 2 solid bodies in this file, but I can only find 1.

And if you zoom in to the area circled in yellow (from Top View) the Helix is not fully connected to the cylinder.

Also, have you installed the latest Service Pack and Update for 2015?

Phil..

In general most have found "STEP" to be a better neutral format vs IGES.. IGES (from my experience) causes more errors..looses features/parts,etc..

Most us "regular CAD users" have learned to always use STEP over the years vs IGES..

You have done a ton of extra (and redundant) work and some stuff just doesn't make sense (see blue boxes).

Back in a while with some suggestions.

Thanks for taking a look.

My approach was one that was intuitive to me, piecing together what the tools did. I am 100% certain there is a lot of redundant work. Given that things were able to be printed, I didn't worry too much about figuring out the right way to do things, as I was able to get things done my own way.

It seems to have now backfired on me.

If you have any suggestions as to where to start learning correct basics, please let me know. I'd really like to learn.

Thanks,

Phil
