Im creating drawings for each model state of an assembly, and each drawing will contain an exploded view. How do you change the parts model state an exploded view?

You can't do that within the model state of an assembly (.iam). You have to use Presentation File (.ipn) to associate your exploded views to each model state of your assembly. See this link:

I guess the question im trying to ask is, can you use the same .ipn file for multiple model states, or do you have to make a separate .ipn file for each model state?

Hi Joe, to include other model states you need to right click and create a new scene. You can select the model state in the Insert dialogue that opens.

James, that's exactly what I needed. A follow up question though, in a drawing view of the presentation, how do you change the view's scene its representing?

Double click the view and you should have a dropdown.

The drop down is greyed out and locked. Is there a setting that needs to be changed?

In the presentation, when trying to change the Representation, the Model State is also greyed out and locked:

Yes, you cannot change the model state of a presentation scene.

Bizarrely you don't seem to be able to change the scene once placed in a drawing. I didn't know this was the case. I will find out if this is a bug.

Edited reply:
We have found this same behaviour in code going back 9 years. I don't know why you cannot change it.
Thanks for reporting it, we are looking into if there's a reason why.

Thank you for your response. Let me know if you need anything additional information on the part or drawing.

Hi! I just checked INVGEN-77376. There isn't much progress on that. It is still not resolved. If you want to escalate the issue, please contact Autodesk Product Support and mention the defect ID, INVGEN-77376.

Many thanks!

Hi, in Inventor 2026 it IS possible to change model state in the presentation environment, but you still cannot change it in the drawing environment. .
