Explain this to the class 2010

Feels like I am back in the MDT days where everyone would get different solutions doing the "same" thing.

Open the attached part.
Drag the EOP down to Loft3 (the first lofted feature).

Notice the "seam" along the bottom edge.
Edit the feature and notice the order of the Rail selections.

Drag the EOP all the way down.

Try Split the handle into two solid bodies using the XY Plane. I get an error.

Edit the Loft (can't delete or you will get a bunch of errors) and CTRL unselect the Rails (this is a bit tricky) and then reselect in the order Top, Bottom and then sides. Notice the "seam" is now at the top (you might have to turn off workplane to see).

Now try Split the handle into two solid bodies and it works fine?

I am able to duplicate your experience up to the CTRL unselect, which you say is tricky and, sure enough, I am unable to accomplish that. Could you explain in more detail how to unselect the rails? Thanks!

I might just have to do it the wrong way just to show the class how to recover without a string of errors.

Edit Feature the Loft.
Click on one of the rails listed in the dialog box.
Hold down the CTRL key and click on the same rail in the graphics window.
Click another of the rails in the dialog box, hold CTRL and click on the same rail in the graphics window.
Repeat
Repeat

Now click the Top rail
then the bottom rail
then the two side rails in any order.

Let me know if these instructions get it done. If not, I need to document the steps in more detail for my lab.

I forgot to mention that it might look like nothing happens at first - but just follow the procedure, don't click a second time if it looks like nothing happened.

Yep, it worked! Mentioning that you may not see anything happening for a bit made all the difference. I was able to re-order the selection of the rails as you instructed and the Split Solid operation completed with no error.
Puzzling out the "why" is for more erudite readers than moi.
