dxf/dwg into inventor problems

Hi 

So i am trying to bring in some dxf or dwg files that where created or edited in autocad in to inventor.

i go to part, pic my work plain, then ACAD and go to that process sometimes they come in of and i can extruded them ok other times there broken.. and can only extrude the outline or nothing at all.. so how do i fix this? i can send a sample if needed i for got when i use autocad i always "join" then save as dxf and or dwg... the samurai one works but the city one will not

Your sketch probably is open.

If so, your first job is to make sure all the Coincident ends of all the sketch entities are Constrained together.

You can tell Inventor to do that automatically (2:17 minute mark) when you import the sketch.

 

I hardly use non-native geometry as an Inventor base sketch b/c it nearly always comes in with all kinds of problems. The reason I found is b/c too many 'cad operators' don't know what they're doing when they use AutoCAD, so their sketches suck. I used AutoCAD daily between 1988 and 1998, and saw a lot of stupid things that 'cad operators' did b/c they didn't know what they were doing. So my guess is, you either forgot to do the AutomaticConstraints when you imported, or AutoCAD drawing isn't done right, and now you have to fix it inside Inventor. If it's a simple profile, then it shouldn't be too difficult to fix.

 

If this doesn't work, then your best bet is to post a sample file in here for inspection.

As far as I know the use of dwg is done by:
1. New sketch

2. Project DWG geometry

3. Modeling operations based on native Inventor sketches.

 

You also need to make sure that the dwg drawing has properly closed loops.

hi yeah it is probably me as i am no where near a pro. i really only us it for are i know there over kill but it is what i learned on in school.. but i will add to samples one that works that was edited by my self and one that was not

I could only open the DXF file due to my older version of Inventor.

The sketch is just like the ones I've seen in the past.

It has way too many entities to be useful.

The problem w/these kinds of sketches is, it takes an inordinate amount of time to convert them into native Inventor sketch entities. So you're stuck either wasting time editing them manually, or you're stuck with a gigantic part file that, if used in an assembly, will bog down your computer.

If this was created from a scan converted to vector format, then this is what you're stuck with most of the time?

Hi @cadman777, mine literally took a minute. Look at the video. ☝️

I think, @CCarreiras worked for his effect a similar time.

You are right in principle; if a lot of bad dwg drawings but no productivity problem here.

Hi! The imported geometry contains way too much detail to create a good profile. Try this. After importing the DXF/DWG file as 2D sketches, use Boundary Patch command to create a planar surface based on the imported sketch. Then you can either create another sketch and project the boundary patch face, or simply use Thicken command to solidify the surface.

Hi @vutresvikHL72S 

You have received at least 3 working strategies here, documented by screenshots and videos. You already know that you can 1) insert a dwg directly into a sketch and use extrude 2) close the same sketch with boundary patch 3) insert a dwg in the model and project the dwg into a new sketch.
There are a lot of solutions and a lot of knowledge here.
I think you can now mark posts that have helped you and that are useful.
Unless you haven't solved your problem yet. If so, can you describe what obstacles you are currently facing?
