You know how detail views can have a jagged border? Is there a way to make a cropped or base view with the same border style?

I know of the technique of making a view off the sheet, then making a detail view that you bring into the sheet. I was hoping for a way to do that without an extra view that nobody sees and may accidently be published or printed with the drawing. I also want to be able to easily adjust the view size.

I got a workaround:

First make a normal rectangular cut. Then edit the Crop sketch and delete all but one of the rectangular lines. If you delete all 4 lines it doesn't work. Then draw the area with a squiggly spline as you like.

There is currently no native option to apply a jagged (detail-style) boundary directly to a Base or standard Crop view.

The workaround mentioned above works because Inventor still requires at least one closed boundary element to keep the crop feature valid. If you delete all four original rectangle edges, the crop definition fails. Keeping one segment preserves the crop feature, and you can then replace the rest with a spline to simulate a jagged border.

So effectively:

  • Base view → Crop

  • Edit Crop sketch

  • Keep one original segment

  • Replace the others with a spline

Functionally it behaves like a detail boundary, but it’s still technically a crop.

If you need associative resizing similar to a Detail View, unfortunately that still requires creating an actual Detail View.
