Dimension lines never resizing correctly

How is this even a thing in 2020?

Capture.JPG

First, for some reasons placing the first dimension of 17 11/17 didn't proportionally resize the other lines, as it normally does with the first placed dimension. So my top line was very small. Placing the top dimension then proceeded to place lines of that size for some unknown reasons. The only way to fix this is to delete and replace the dimension.

Also, can we please have the option to keep the dimension where we put it? and stop having it keep its proportional distance to the line itself. That way we can cleanly align and place our dimensions directly where we put them instead of having to replace them because they move further or closer if I input a bigger or smaller dimension than the current line length...

Just wish the Inventor team could, for at least a year, focus on cleaning up and refining existing features instead of pilling on new features.

Zoom in on short lines before dimensioning to avoid that issue.

If dimension text ht did not remain constant - that would require a lot more zooming in and out.

More of a workaround then anything else sadly. Solidworks had this working perfectly for years, and not once have I been glad dimensions work the way they do in Inventor as opposed to Solidworks.

Hi! The auto-scaling behavior is only available when the sketch does not have any dimension. If you have any pre-existing dimension, the auto-scaling will be off. Is this the behavior you are asking about?

Although the workflow is nice in some cases, we have actually received a lot of negative feedback asking to turn it off. This is why we offer an option to suppress the behavior (Tools -> App Options -> Sketch -> "Auto-scale on initial dimension").

Many thanks!

Hi,

I am not talking about the "Auto-scale on initial dimension" feature.

I am talking about the dimension style, the lines which are giant and you literally can't miss if you look at the picture. For some reasons, these lines scales with the initial line length vs the sketch size, and is stuck at that weird, useless size.

In every single situation ever, every dimensions of the sketch should be exact same "style". I'm talking about the length of the lines all around the dimension value itself. There is not a single case in which we would want or need some dimensions with longer or shorter lines then others... Also, it should always look the same no matter how zoomed in or out you are.

Same with the position of the dimensions itself. I agree that the very first dimension you place in a sketch, should keep the exact same proportional distance from the line you are applying to dimension too. But once that initial dimension is placed, every other dimensions should stay in space exactly where you click it. Right now, if you place a dimension that is "0.765 in", because you randomly drew a line, and you input "20 in", the dimension will fly off to mars. Why would I ever want my dimension to not be where I put it? I often have to manually click and replace every dimension I put because it is much cleaner when they are aligned. Which would automatically be the case if you would not move my dimension after I put it.

These are very small QoL changes that would save A LOT of time and hassle.

Hi! I am sorry I misunderstood the request. This is about the sketch dimension line display. Yes, I know what you are talking about. You could sometimes end up with a long dimension lines for a small dimension. There is absolutely room for improvement. I will work with the project team to see what we can do. I don't believe a solution would come quickly and apply to existing releases though.

Many thanks!
