Derive - What controls file path?

QUESTION:

Does anyone know what controls the "Open" dialog file path when deriving a part?  (See screenshot)

WORKFLOW:

File -> New -> [Part - in this case, Sheet Metal.ipt]

Manage -> Derive

REASON FOR QUESTION:

It's a real pain to browse to a different file location EVERY SINGLE TIME I derive.  It's understandable to have to browse out the first time.  But when deriving several parts from the same original file, it seems that Inventor should remember the last used file path.  Instead, Inventor seems to pick a random file path.  Any insights/ideas on this would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance!

There is a slight work around with this.

If you have recently created the file you want to derive, it is accessible from here, complete with path name to get from the current random folder to the folder the derived part is stored in.

This is also true for save and replace, and open.

Its limitation though is the number of files it remembers and there is no preview before placement.

It would be a nice feature if Inventor could set all the search file paths based on the current selection. (Open, save and replace, derive etc)screenshot of derive file dialoguescreenshot of derive file dialogue

By default it should target your Work directory as established in your Project File.

Just insert the picture rather than attaching it as a file

Hi! I guess you are using Default project as opposed to custom project. The file path is default to the last open or save path. If you are using custom project, the default path should be the \Workspace\ folder or the last save or open path under the \Workspace\.

Many thanks!

Thanks@Anonymous !!!

That workaround is great!  I don't know why I never noticed it before.  I really appreciate your help - it will save me a ton of time & extra clicks.

@blair thank you for your input.  Sadly, though, this is not the case (at least for me).

@johnsonshiuethank you for the input.  I am not using the Default project - I am using a custom project.

In my experience, it appears that half of what you said is correct:  it seems that the file path defaults to the last open path (I probably didn't notice this because I typically open from Vault).  However, it appears that the save path does NOT affect the derive file path.

As @Anonymous said, it would be nice if Inventor could set all the search file paths based on the current selection (open, save and replace, derive, etc.).
