Custom Appearance Styles Do Not Match Editor?

I am trying to create a custom appearance for a material. However, I can get it to look just right in the appearance editor, but when I apply it to a part, it looks nothing like what I see in the appearance editor. This is both for a texture appearance, as well as one using an image with the brightness changed and the image inverted. In both cases, what the part shows as is the default texture colors or default image. Am I doing something wrong or is this a bug?

As you can see, the part should be a light white/gray color with streaks, and yet it is almost black with no variations in color. No matter what I change the color in the texture editor to, it always shows up as that same dark color with no color variation. Same for any changes to the part size, the vein spacing and size, etc. Nothing changes the color.

Yes, it is using "Default Stone" which is the name of the custom material I made (which is what is shown in the texture editor window)

Why do we see the default material in the active material list?

I guess you didn't apply it to the part.

Textures are on. And I was not tying a color to a material, just doing a color override. Using the built in colors overrides and matches the color preview, but for some reason I can't get a custom color to match the preview. In fact, I can't get a speckle pattern to show up at all
