Cross section properties - Elastic and plastic section modulus

Hi!

Are there any ways to extract further cross section properties from custom profiles, than what you get from Inspect -> Region properties.

Specifically I'm interested in elastic section modulus (Wel [mm3]) and plastic section modulus (Wpl [mm3]) for checking linear buckling acc to Eurocode 3.

These are properties you get from tables for standard beams (IPE, HEB etc.) but we mostly make custom C-profile beams from sheet metal.

Using online calculators is a possibility, but you can only add flanges and web, with square corners. So this will simply be an approximation, and not accurate.

Calculating by hand is very time consuming, so extracting it from Inventor or Nastran would be handy.

Hi! Inventor does not have the command to calculate the section modulus on a given section. But you may calculate it yourself based on the region properties.

Sx = I (area moment of inertia) / X (the distance between the outer most edge in X direction and the neutral axis)

Sy = I (area moment of inertia) / Y (the distance between the outer most edge in Y direction and the neutral axis)

Many thanks!

Make a sketch of the profile.

Setup equations in parameters.

Change size and get answer on any size.
