Hi everyone,

Can Anyone explain how to create the sheet metal roll like helical curve and open its flat pattern?

I am not able to find clear terms to ask, so attaching image (taken for reference from google images) highlighted in red which required.

Thanks in advance.

Without a file or dimensions to work with, we can't really do much.  But here's the general theory:

  • create 3D sketches of the inner and outer helical edges
  • loft a surface between those 3D sketches
  • thicken the surface to your sheetmetal thickness

This usually creates a flattenable piece, unless you've defined it in such a way that it would intersect itself when flattened.

Hello @Anonymous if you can provide a bit more information I'm sure it would be easier to show you how to get going.

Here is a short screencast showing how to Coil Surface then Thicken to create the general shape you're looking for.

Hi,

Thanks for your response.

I have seen the attached files but I didn't understand the procedure used by you to create that model as I have little experience on Inventor.

If possible can you explain or provide any links of similar or same model created videos or documented procedure or atleast the commands used for my understanding.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Thanks for your response.

Actually I am practicing these type of models just to develop my skills in Inventor. So I don't have any attempted part file or data.

Using Inventor 2018.

Inch or mm any, as it is only for understanding the procedure.

Any reference videos or documents links will be helpful.

@Anonymous building spiral staircases is pretty advanced depending on what you want the outcome to be. How much experience do you have with this kind of design within Inventor?

Were you able to follow along with the screencast to create the single side shape?

Can you attach your attempt of what you've tried so far?
