creating a linear hole

when placing a linear hole, can I dimension to a plane, for example I want to place a hole from the center of my part and there is a plane passing through the center, therefore I want to place the hole at a dimension of zero from the plane. Usually on a sketch I can just project the plane. Also I know I could create a sketch prior to making the hole but I was just wanting to place via a dimension while creating the hole and not using a sketcth or a prior created point.

I know I can make a sketch and project a line off the datum, I'm asking if it can be done while I'm creating the hole feature itself not before hand.

In the linear hole command .. No  ..face is you only option to base it off of.

However if you're going to be basing holes off of a datum ..then I would recommend doing it via Points in a sketch. ..

Since I don't know what this part looks like, but are you trying to put a hole in the center of your part, or somewhere off-center?  If the former you can insert a workpoint using the center point of loop of edges.  Then you can place the hole based on a point.   If the part changes size, the hole stays center.

So basically you always have to create something prior to creating the hole. Therefore when creating a linear placed hole you have to use an edge during creation because nothing else is available or can be created on the fly. Would you say that this is a correct statement?

Yes ...I would say that is correct.

I've never been able to pick anything but a face when I use Linear holes..
