Wondering how I could achieve something like this on a cylinder, not sure if I could do it with new planes or the mesh tool.

Have you looked through some of the appearances that come out of the box?  I believe there are some diamond ones in there that you can adjust to make it look similar to what you are looking for.

Unless you are needing to 3D print this and need it to be in the actual model instead of just an appearance.

Hi, if you want to model a part like this as a practice, I leave you the first path that came to mind. Surely the companions will show you more seductive alternatives.
Keep in mind what @Cadmanto  commented about appearances. The attached file consumes much more memory than a file with the correct use of the appearance.
In my file go to parameters and change the value of "Z" to increase the number of rhombuses on the sides of the part. Change if you want the angular variable to see the effects it produces in the part.
I hope this helps with your problem. Regards

I guess start with a sketch on the top face, use the Octagon to create the number of facets. You should be able to create an angled work plane across two end points of the octagon. It probable will require a circular sketch around the "belt-line" of the ring exterior. Create your cut triangular extrusion, mirror and pattern around the ring.
