Create text on cone shaped surface

Hi all,

I like to create text on a cone shaped surface but can't figure out how

I tried the following two options:

- Use the emboss future.

This makes the text go round like what happens in the following video (I want it straight)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1gX9eGlHiE

- Use the 'convert to geometry' function and then use the 'project to surface' function in 3D sketch mode. This didn't work out either, see the screenshot I took.  (this is explained in the following video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSMJMMu_OV4)

Attached are a couple of pictures to show the result I like to get.

I would love to hear your ideas.

Would the attached be something you are looking for? It is in IV2018 format.

Cheers,

Igor.

I think I might be following what you are looking for. I have attached a 2020 version. Let me know if you cant open and I can do a 2019.

I suspect that Geometry Text might get you where you want to be.

Attach your *.ipt file here and I will give it an attempt (it is a bit of a trick).

Here's a slight improvement of Brad's IPT. Some additional work needs to be done.

Thanks a lot guys for all your responses.

I'm sorry, should have told you I'm currently working in Inventor 2017 so I can't open any of your files.

Hi Tim,

There are multiple ways to do that on a Cone in Inventor. Please share your attempt so that forum experts can help provide the guidance.

Many thanks!

Hi Johnson,

The task appears to be a lot more challenging than it seems from the first glance. To get the sides of the text normal to the cone surface I had to use Derive Surface with follow up Thicken. Maybe I made it way too complicated, but by far - I couldn't think of anything else to get it done. The attached files are in IV2018 format.

Cheers,

Igor.

Hi Guys,

This one would have been a good Inventor Challenge. But, I have to reveal the secret. Certainly, it would be hard to operate on the cone face. You could convert the text and project it somehow but it could be messy. Emboss supports cylinder (cone) only. But, placing the sketch text is the most trickiest part.

However, you can think of a cone as a bent plate. Then you can easily place the text on the plate. Then bend it. Please take a look at the attached part in 2017. The solution is relatively simple. Enjoy!

Happy 20th Birthday to Inventor!

Many thanks!

Hi Johnson,

It is an interesting solution, indeed. Yet, I can't help but to think to myself - the solution falls into the work around category, rather than a workflow. It is, however, not that often such type of Embos is need, really. Thanks for the solution. 😀

Cheers,

Igor.
