Correct position in Assembly Mode?

Hello,

 

I have two stl files that are generated from Blender. I have converted them both into .ipt files. I am trying to put them back into their original position. 

 

I tried to place two ipt files at the same time, but they didn't come in with correct position. But based on the complexity of the two parts, I can't really constrain them perfectly into their original position. Can anybody help me with this position problem? Thank you very much. 

 

(When I imported two stl files in blender, they are positioned into corrected place. And I opened them in Inventor and converted into solid separately.)

 

Here are the images for correct positions and stl files. (ipt files are too big to be uploaded together)

Hello Mr/Ms. Liu,

 

Have you heard about Inventor mesh operations for downstreams? I suppose you can leverage the tool to make some workfeatures and then try to constraint those workfeatures for a bypass.

Hello,

 

I can use Fit Mesh Face to create the surface and specify the surface type for airway and skin. But the problem is I want the place of the two parts to be constrained to be exacted position as it is in CT scan. 

 

Now, I have stl files for airway, skin, and the combined the two. And the ipt files for airway and skin. 

 

How can I put the two parts into assembly which contains their original position, and at the same time I want to subtract the airway from the skin. 

 

I am able to subtract the airway form the skin because I have two ipt parts and they are placed in Assembly. But they are not in the exact position.

Hello @Anonymous thanks for attaching the files and describing your intent well.

 

I don't know if it is going to be 'exact' because the mesh in CorrectedPosition.ipt is slightly different than Airway.ipt, but to get it very close:

  • Open Airway.ipt
  • Turn on Shaded With Edges
  • Create a Point at an easily distinguishable location, for example the tip of the bottom back little spike is what I used.
  • Create a Plane on the Point to each of the Origin Planes.

  • Do the same thing from the same spot in CorrectedPosition.ipt

  • Create a New Assembly and Place both skinReconstructed.ipt and Airway.ipt
  • It appears that the origin location for both the CorrectedPosition.ipt and skinReconstructed.ipt are the same.
  • Ground and Root skinReconstructed.ipt 
  • In CorrectedPosition.ipt Measure the distance from the YZ 'Point Plane' to the YZ Origin Plane.
  • Constrain YZ 'Point Plane' of Airway.ipt to the Assembly YZ Origin Plane with this distance offset
  • Repeat for XZ and XY.

Would be easier if you could create a location mark or simple square cut within Blender. 

 

It is a bit tedious, but not sure what you're trying to accomplish. Hope that helps!

Thank you so much for your detailed explanation!  I have one more question. The point created in the CreectedPosition.ipt won't be exact position of the point created on the airway.ipt. 

 

Is this the reason why that the constrained model isn't exact?

@Anonymous yeah, when looking at the differences between the two, the mesh is close but isn't exactly the same.

 

If you can create or remove a cube before you export it that would give a great reference location and no point or plane creation needed.

 

I haven't used Blender so not sure of the options it has. Hope that helps.
