Context menu "Delete Coincident Constraint" -- is this a bug, or am I stupid?

(Inventor 2018)

  1. Sketch a circle, then a line. Put a coincident constraint from line endpoint to circle center point. Hit F9 to clear display of constraints.
  2. With nothing selected the right -click menu does not show "Delete Coincident Constraint".
  3. Select the line, and the coincident constraint becomes visible, and a right-click anywhere shows "Delete Coincident Constraint".
  4. No matter how close you are to the displayed constraint the mouse is on right-click, selecting "Delete Coincident Constraint" removes the display of the constraint from the screen, but the constraint is still there.

This is confusing behavior at best, but really just smells like a bug. But then again, Inventor has confounded me in the past. Do I just not understand the divine logic of  right-click "Delete Coincident Constraint"?

Hi! Yes, there is indeed a bit inconsistency here. The coincident constraint between a circle center and a line end point is a bit different than the one for two lines. The behavior is actually the same as adding another sketch point on top of an end point of a line. There is only one coincident constraint participant, as shown in the constraint glyph. The behavior does look strange but it seems to be the way sketch point and line endpoint coincident constraint has been treated. Essentially, the Delete All Coincident Constraint is not able to handle this case properly. I will work with project team to understand this legacy behavior better and see what we can do with it.

Many thanks!

I see the same thing in Inventor 2016.

If you repeat your same procedure, but with two lines instead of a line and circle, it works.  If you try to use the method with a line and any point object (center of a Circle or Arc, insert point of a Text object, or even just a Point), then it doesn't remove the constraint.  This wouldn't be so bad if it didn't still display the command in the right-click menu, but it does.

One little thing I will point out is that the "Delete Coincident Constraint" isn't actually removing the display of the constraint at all.  It's simply that this process ends with the line deselected, so it isn't displayed anymore for that reason.  The problem you're reporting absolutely exists - just that one little detail doesn't have anything to do with it.
