Constraining components to work points

Am I able to create work points in a 2D sketch in an assembly and then constrain a component to it after I exit the sketch?

No..

You can only add workpoints in an assembly to a sketch point created in the IPT.. Not assembly level sketches..

Am I able to make a design using work points and then constrain the component to those points? The points in the work features tab.

Yes, you can constrain components to work points.

Building on what mcgyvr said, here's a workflow that might work for you:

  1. Create an empty part in your assembly using the "Create" button ("Assemble" tab -> "Component" panel).
  2. Select the XY plane as the base plane.
  3. Create your sketch on the appropriate plane. You can create a new, associative plane from a face/plane in the parent assembly if you wish.
  4. "Finish" out of the sketch and add your workpoints using the "Point" command on the "Work Features" panel
  5. OR... Finish the sketch, return to the parent assembly, and add your workpoints at the assembly level. Either way will work.

Hopefully that accomplishes what you need. 🙂
