Composite Files Defaulting to Invisible in Inventor 2018

Recently I upgraded to 2018, and I initially had the issue described in these previous threads here:

Specifically, I had a composite model that would display in 2D drawings when imported as an individual part, but was hidden when part of an assembly. For me, The option to "Include all surfaces" were grayed out, however I was able to make the composite model Visible, which checked off the still grayed out "Include all surfaces" option.

The issue is that the 2D template defaults to composites not being displayed, even after manually changing it by importing a composite model assembly, making everything visible, removing the base model and saving the copy as template. When left in the drawing, the composite stays visible, but I would prefer to keep the template blank. While it's not the worlds biggest deal that I have to manually set the composites to visible, this part is used very frequently, and I like to streamline my process as much as possible. Is this just an issue with 2018? I never had this issue with 2017 or previous versions.

I thought that those setting were retained in the registry and not in the templates as they stay persistent until changed again..

You may have a registry permissions error (I assumed those persistent settings are retained there but it may be stored somewhere else)..

Might not be a bad idea to run the Inventor Reset Utility after backing up (exporting) your application options so they can be imported after..

That can help with any corrupt Inventor user profiles..

I ran the Inventor Reset utility (forgot to backup, but thankfully i have very few customization anyways) and it sadly did not fix the issue. Thank you for the suggestion though! It's definitely something I wouldn't have thought to use otherwise (mostly because I didnt know it existed)

Still may be a registry issue though..

I thought the persistent drawing settings like that you had to check them upon initial placement of a base view.. Then save the drawing and then next time those boxes would be checked (remembered)..

What about closing Inventor then right clicking on the Inventor icon and selecting "run as administrator" then trying to place a base view and check that setting then save the drawing.. Then start another drawing and place a base view.. Is the setting retained now..

If not.. Good luck.. I'm out of answers for that I think

Well I just ran into a new issue, "Administrative" Inventor 2018 cannot see my network drives where all the files are located... So I cant even test it, as I need an assembly with a composite file to confirm that the setting is saved. At least I know running the administrative version didnt automatically change it over either (not that I expected it to, but I looked anyways)

Hi! I think this is about the Recovery option. When you create a base view, go to Recovery tab -> check Include Surface Body option. After that, the surface or composite should be included as long as they are visible.

If I'm understanding your solution correctly, the base model does not have a recovery error (noted by the red + sign), so there is no recovery option. I should note that this is only an issue in Drawings, as there are no issues when working with composite parts, opened individually or in assemblies.

Hi! I think you might have misunderstood what I meant. There is indeed a Recovery tab in Drawing view. This is new to 2018 to support Mesh object in drawing view. Please take a look at the following thread.

@tom_vierling did you get an example to run as administrator where your files are showing up correctly?

Do you have a screenshot you could share showing what you're experiencing?

There was a recent post that might be similar to what you're experiencing.

After ignoring this problem for about seven months and coming back to this, it turns out this was my issue the whole time! I apologize for misinterpreting what you were referring to (I think specifically "recovery" was throwing me off) but the included link helped significantly. Thank you!
