Component Isolation for Drawings

Hi,

I have a pretty large and adaptable assembly through iLogic. I am trying to make shop drawings for each component to be fabricated by our welders. what I started to do  was open a certain view of the entire assembly, and then turn the visibility off of everything I didn't need. This is time consuming, and as my assembly changes in size through iLogic, the drawing seems to add peices that I need to go back and turn off.

I read another post about creating view representations but this also seems time consuming. Could the best way be to simply create a drawing based off the specific components part or assembly file? I feel like doing that is like skipping a step. There has to be a better way to do this.

I am using Inventor 2016 with vault basic on windows 7 prof, 64 bit..

Any help is greatly appreciated,

Thanks

Sandro

I actually just tried that about an hour ago and felt a wave of relief. of course that was short lived...

It looked like it worked perfectly, but the other sheets needed to be updated..so i updated them, and all of the sudden those annoying parts came back. what was even worse, I went back to my model and it looked fine! I didnt understand so i went back into the view I had placed, saw that it was actually referencing the right view and LOD and just for curiosity, i changed the view and accepted it...no change...then i went back into the view and changed it back to the proper view and it worked! this made absolutely no sense to me whatsoever..

Aside from that maddening confusion, I have no idea what "associative" means and what checking that box actually does.

Thanks

In this case I'm still thinking ccarrieras as solution should be correct but it is worth noting I have seen one or two glitches when trying to apply this.

1. Even if the reps are associated you sometimes need to activate any other rep (in the drawing) then switch back to the one you want.

2. Delete the view and place it again.

If After both of these the components are still visible then they are definitely visible in that rep in the model.  Also I would make sure I leave the model always in the default rep (the one you will check in) before placing the drawing views then changing the rep in the drawing. I also try to avoid then opening the model from one of the activated reps in the drawing.

PS. Blair not sure if you updated you're post or I just missed it the first time but I intend to check out Autodesk Screencast in place of Camtasia for a few short videos I need to make. Thanks.

Ha ha you beat me to it. associative means it is tied to that rep.  If it's not then changes in the model will not be reflected in the drawing.  You will also notice that when its ticked the 'visibility' option is greyed out when you try to turn the parts of in the drawing. ie it's being controlled by the model.

Regarding "That associative", you must do this: Edit the view, disable associative, close ..... edit again, enable associative, close... then you can view some difference (if there's something to view different).(sometimes, or lots of times this option freezes and you have to do this to "force the associative")

Regarding the first part... i guess you mess with things you dont domine... and now youre a little lost... and ity's normal, because you have to understand well how inventor works to do these changes mannually. Inventor work with a bunch of links between  files.... you have to know what's happen when you want to break them and restablish again.

Tip: Pratice with a simple assembly, then you will understand how it works.

all,

I cant tell you how much i appreciate the help. I would have much less progress and much less help without it.

I believe I am on the way to getting this right. I have made the separate views AND separate LOD to match. This seems to work but is a little buggy. I just need to go and update the model, or drawing, or change the view and change back a couple times and then everything seems to settle out.

I think this may be the best its ever going to be (with Inventor 2016) but I'm done arguing with it and will just learn to work with it.

As for the separate sheet, or separate drawing issue, I think im going to do a combination to reduce file size. I never realized it but just out of curiosity i checked the file size and the drawing file is enormous compared to the actual model file!
I dont know what else to say or do with this issue so i think thats it. Thanks everyone!
