Clicking on the New File menu causes Inventor 2018 to freeze.

See the screencast I've attached below. Notice how the buttons change to blue before I click on the New File menu, and how they don't respond afterward.

I think that the issue is that the New File menu is spawning behind the main window; however, I can't access it because any operation on the main window is blocked while that menu is up.

I can "unfreeze" Inventor by going into the Task Manager and killing the "New File" subtask.

Try disabling the "My Home" from the Inventor>Applications>General: and see if that fixes the issue. 

It wouldn't hurt to run the Inventor "Register". You will need to change the year in the command path to match your year/version of Inventor

Re-Register Inventor

1. open a command prompt as administrator
2. type :"C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Inventor 2016\Bin\Inventor.exe" /install
3. Wait for about 30 seconds & then retry Inventor
