Challenging punch - How would you model?

Hey there.

 

How would you model these punches on the conical bottom piece?

 

I get a close enough approximation with sweep using guide rail on the cylindrical sleeve. Just wondering about the conical bottom, because that one doesn't seem to accept similar inputs unless I create a new solid.

Despite having drawn as sheet metal and with a rip, I don't actually look to unfold these pieces.

Can you Attach the *.ipt file of your attempt here?

 

If you don't need Flat Pattern then I would probably model one side and Shell.

Not trying to dissuade, but if I made a part with that many features, it would bog my system down so bad that I couldn't work.

Hi Yannick,

 

I don't see a punchtool workflow in this case. A punchtool has to be place on a 2D sketch on a planar sheet metal face. The face could be unfolded bend, but not on a rolled face.

I am absolutely aware it cannot be unfolded in inventor.

I am trying to model the feature -which is a punch in real life- to have an accurate model for drawings.

Yeah, it's suboptimal, but sometimes one needs a 1:1 accurate model

I hear ya.

Like Johnson said, you can't punch a non-flat surface.

But you can punch a flat sheet and then roll it.

But if you do, your punches get contorted.

OK, so you want to use it on a punch press.

How will the operator do it?
1. On a flat sheet that gets punched first and then rolled?

2. Or on a rolled&welded cylindrical sheet?

If #1, then will it be one punch at a time or multiple punches simultaneously?

I'm working in 2010, so can't see your model.

So did it just as a visual.

Find attached one method you can use.

It's a bit tricky, but it simplifies the process a bit.

 

Picking up on JD's suggestion, you can also make a surface and then Thicken it.

I don't know how it's manufactured since it's something we order from someone else.

 

I am familiar with the theory of order of operations, but I don't think that will make too much of a difference in this case.


I've been working with Sheet Metal for 10 years and as such I'm quite familiar with laser cutting + press brake.

As such I was looking to expand my horizon on geometry like this + get a better representation than this

This got me on the right track - It's also a better solution than the sweep I used.
