I’m having some issues with this Inventor release.  Maybe some of it is something I’m doing wrong, but many of these problems appear on Autodesk forum as “working as intended”…I’ve used this software for **** near 15 years now, and some of these design decisions are just baffling.

I don’t know if there’s some way you guys can help here, these are the issues I’m seeing:

This bug was reported back in May and it’s still not fixed.  Also they are trying to blame Windows.  This only occurs in Inventor and ONLY in one particular dialogue box.

  • I have a particular .idw file that will not display the “Check-In” dialogue box.  Right clicking the file and selecting “Check In” from the Vault Tab in inventor causes nothing to happen.  Most other files work fine.
  • This one is probably my fault, something is not setup correctly I think…

When creating a new .ipt file I get the message “The following style definitions in template … differ from the definitions in the style library…”  Is there a way to setup the styles as they appear in my 2014 version?  The texture/color appearance defaults in the 2020 version are really terrible, very cluttered and make it difficult to actually tell what the model looks like.

  • When importing a .step file which is an assembly, there is no way to put the assembly and child parts in different folders.  Our standard workflow is to put the assembly into the “root” of the vendor folder, and the sub/child parts in a subfolder.  This is because most “downloaded” .step files generate similar/identical child part names for very different assemblies and if they all go into “root” they will clash and make a mess.  By the same token it does not work to put the assembly into the subfolder, because this “hides” what parts are available.

Apparently this is “as intended” even though it completely breaks many people’s workflows and does not offer a workaround.  Dragging the assembly into the root folder often confuses it and breaks the links to the child parts.

  • Changing tap hole size automatically changes tap & drill depth.  This did not occur in 2014 and older.  This is just plain dangerous.  If I altered the tap/drill depth, that means I have done so FOR A REASON.  The software should not be taking it upon itself to overwrite what I have done.
  • Checking out from vault client always asks to replace “designs.ipj” even though it has not changed and both the client and vault show “white dot”.

Thanks,

Thanks,

I had trouble determining where one issue started and the other began in your original post so I "tried" to separate them.. Please let me know if I got some out of order or whatever..

1- Yep.. Known issue.. No real fix yet.. Some have stated a reinstall has fixed it for them..

2- Not sure on that one

3- No you really can't.. I believe they made changes to how lighting effects appearances/surfaces,etc.. and you will need to "adjust" your styles again to get things how you want them (or similar to how they were before). I'm assuming you are aware of how to get rid of that message that comes up about the difference.. If not let me know and we can walk you though that..

4-Try using "Reference Model" instead of "Convert Model".. That way you don't get all of the individual parts and don't need to worry about them.. It just may work out better for you.. I just started using that and find it much better than Convert for my needs..

5- Yep.. They changed the hole dialog UI and functionality a bit and that is one of the annoyances from what I remember.. Yesterday I just noticed that tolerances applied to one hole get retained too when you create another hole.. Not how I would prefer it to work..

6- Not sure on that one..

Hi! Guys,

Regarding the "Check-In" missing, it does not sound right. Please install all applicable updates. Then use Inventor Reset Utility (All Programs -> Autodesk -> Inventor 20xx -> Tools -> Inventor Reset Utility) to reset all settings back to install default.

The threaded hole depth is determined by the standard on the thread table. In the past, the thread table did not include depth column. We got negative feedback on not following standard depth. On Inventor 2016, The depth is determined by the standard. If you don't want the standard depth, you can simply edit the thread.xls and remove the values in the depth column. Then, the depth will persist on the entered value.

Many thanks!
