Canoe Design need help shelling the canoe

Hi,

Our group is designing a canoe in AutoDesk Inventor.  Using the extrusion tool we have been able to build a solid model of our canoe.  The problem that we are running into is that we build it to the inside specifications.

The thickness of the canoe walls need to be 1".  My first attempt was to use the thickness/offset tool and offset the surface 1".  I continually got errors saying this was to thick.

I also tries using the shell tool and shell the canoe going out with 1" thick walls.  Again got a similar error message.

We are in need of some expert help ASAP!

I have attached the two designs we are working on.

First thing I notice is that your ends are not realistic (manufacturable).

Then I checked the sketches and - no dimensions?  What happened to the dimensions.

Then I checked a sketch more closely and a line that should be horizontal is not horizontal?  (see attached)

I was able to shell both files after some minor tweaks, but I recommed starting over.

I recommend you go through these

What JD said!!!

But, I had no trouble shelling your files as is with one minor change to therealasymcanoe. I made the second loft a separate body, shelled both and then booleaned back together.

Is there a way to shell going outward.  So the sketch we created was the inside and we need to shell going out 1", is this possible?

I would put the Rails at the top or midpoint of the profiles.

I cannot see there purpose where they are now?

So last night I redrew the symetric canoe to our outside specifications.  Hopefully it is a "cleaner" better drawing.  You had mentions the ends are unrealistic.  What/how do you suggest to create the ends of the canoe?  We want to to some to some kind of sharpe entry.

Sketch6 is not fully defined?

No dimensions?

How do you create geometry without dimensions?

That is my #1 question.

Missing Tangent Constraints.

Radius of arcs does not make logical sense (not inspectable, therefore not manufacturable, especially in concrete).

When you refer to no dimensions you mean no labelled dimensions? I just
went back and added some missing dimensions.

What do you mean by missing tangent constrains?

And what is meant by radius of arcs doesn't make sense? How do you suggest
to input the arcs? We had just created them to get a close to desired look.

You still didn't answer my #1 question.

How are you creating geometry without using dimensions (see attached image)?

Are you deleting the dimensions?  If so, why?

Are you typing in coordinates using Precise Input toolbar?  If so, why.

When a sketch is fully defined it should turn a dark color and tell you in the lower right corner of the screen that it is fully constrained. (see attached image)  This is usually covered in the first 10 minutes of any Inventor training.

Once sketching is understood - I can quickly move you on to a robust solution.

To create my sketches I was created a box typing in distances using the
line tool. The box was the width I needed say 26" by 14" height. I then
added one side of the arc in mirrored it to the other side and trimmed the
box.

I see what your saying as my sketched are not constrained. How am I do fix
that, re draw the proper way? If you could either explain or link me to a
video that would instruct me through that.

I appreciate all the help. Inventor is new to me and a lot of the videos I
watched were fast or unhelpful in really understanding what I needed to do.

Start a new part file.

Create Sketch1 as shown in attached image.  (the vertical lines should have equal = constraints) (the arcs should have equal = constraints)

Attach your file here.

So I have done the sketches so they are fully constrained.  Thank you so much!!!!  How do you suggest I create the ends to the canoe.  You had previously mentioned that our earlier design was unrealistic.

You missed a step.

See Post #5 above and do exactly what it shows in the image and attach the file here.

You are still using multiple dimensions where you should be using equal (=) constraints.

You will want to learn how to use the Project Geometry tool to aviod extra duplication of work (get lazy).

These (see attached image) are all of your duplicated dimensions.

When I attach my example - the design will be fully parametric.

So I fixed the doubled dimensions on the single sketches but I am ot sure what to do for the different sketches on the different planes.  I am unable to use the equals contraint from one plane sketch to the other.

Attached is what I was able to fix.

Hi

concerning your shelling problem, i've found that if you change the loft2-Edges1 condition, from free condition to tangent, the shell should be done
