Can't select profile for coil feature

Hey all,

I'm still fairly new to Inventor and wanted to make some custom threads to 3d print. I know there is the coolOrange add-in, but I can't seem to get it to work either, plus I want to learn how to do it the manual way with the coil tool.

My issue is that once I finish the sketch of the bolt and revolve it, the coil feature won't let me select my cutting tool. The edges of the triangle profile are horizontally constrained and its left corner is constrained to the bolt's face.

I can't see why it won't let me select it. I've attached screenshots below. As you can see, the triangle should light up green to be selected as the rectangle does, but it doesn't!

Any help is appreciated and thanks in advance!

Hi @ottmanGYHDX,

With regards to the Thread modeller are you selecting the threads via the browser rather than through the graphics window?

Can you upload your files? Just makes it easier to spot any issues.

Is the profile sketch plane perpendicular to the coil?

Maybe try a straight length of the coil pattern & start the sketch there.

Also, if the curves of the coil extrusion collide, you can get issues.  (Maybe your profile exceeds the inside turns of the coil)

Either way, good luck, & an ipt file would be helpful : )

As suggested, Attach your file here.

Thank's for your fast replies!

Can't believe I forgot to link the .ipt, I figured it out though. I made the rather obvious mistake (as JDMather hinted) of not fully defining the cutting triangle, a single line fixed it.
