Can't join extrude

I'm having trouble creating an assembly level join extrude, cut extrude is the only option not greyed out.  If I choose direction one, it shows what I want to do and when I click ok, the extrude disappears.  It's extrusion 2 on the tree, I've attached my files and if anyone can let me know how I can get the extrude I want, I'd be grateful.

The Assembly model features are normally to remove material.

from F1: "

"Assembly features are like part features except they can affect multiple parts, are created in the assembly environment, and are saved in the assembly file. Assembly feature definitions are not passed down to the component.

The workflow and the dialog boxes are the same as for part features, but controls for operations which are not supported are disabled. In general, assembly features support material-removal operations."

if you want add material you must create a new component before or edit any other that already exist in assembly.

Another issue is that with only the assembly file is not possible to open your model. We need also IPTs files.

How will material be added to an assembly in the real world?
Are you intending to edit a part in the context of the assembly?
If so, then right click on the part and select Edit.

What was the purpose of attaching an iam file here?
An iam file is only a record - no geometry.

I know this is an old thread but I wanted to reply since I had the same problem and it might help someone.  What you did within the assembly file is "start a new sketch".  If you start from there, your extrude won't work except for the cut operation.   

What you need to do is go to the assemby tab and use "Create" to start your new sketch and then your "extrude join" will not be whited out when you need it.
