Can I have sketches show on top in the browser?

ok, this may seem to be a dumb question/desire, but I would like to have Inventor's browser show my sketches on the top level and then below that sketch it should show my extrusions, based off that sketch. Why is it the other way round?

Does not make any sense to me since I always have to do the sketch first, then extrude. I always have to keep expanding the extrusions to get to the sketches, it wastes so much time.

Is there a setting I could change?

BTW, this is what I am talking about...

Nope. It's not Fusion 360.

It show the sketch is "consumed" by that extrusion.

With:

Sketch 1

Sketch 2

Sketch 3

Extrusion 1

Extrusion 2

Extrusion 3

You're assuming Extrusion 1 is using Sketch 1.

Also if your sketch 2 used projection from Extrusion 1, it cannot go before Extrusion 1 because Extrusion 1 is not created yet.

This is historical CAD structure.

Hi! Indeed, Inventor only has chronical order browser, not the object grouping browser like Fusion.

Many thanks!

Yes, this is easy to do.

Attach your *.ipt file here and I will demonstrate how.

Hmm, maybe I am  not getting something, but I always make a sketch first, then do the extrusions from the sketch. So in my mind, my sketch comes first if I think about chronological order. is that not correct?

That is why I want sketch to be above an extrusion in the browser.

In your original problem statement you have 3 sketches but in the file that you Attached I can find only one sketch?

Did you Attach the correct file? (The file name is different in the image than the file that  you Attached?)

Here is an example of one of my files.

Is this what you are after?

TheCADWhisperer_0-1697017237813.png

Notice that all of my sketches are at the top of the browser.

sorry, I must have attached the wrong file. Please see this new file I attached. It has three sketches in it. All three sketches are shown underneath extrusions.

By the way, the image you attached does not show up for me. In fact my own image which I attached a few days ago does not show up for me. I have cleared cookies also.

PS: It is very annoying to keep expanding all extrusions to find the correct sketch to edit. That is why I would like to have Inventor show sketches at the top level and all extrusions below that sketch.

Sketch2 and 3 in the latest file that you Attached are not fully defined.

I could fix this for you and show you how to achieve solution to your original problem statement - but first I recommend that you research the BORN Technique (and fully define your sketches).

I recommend using the BORN Technique as much as possible and practical.

Thanks for looking into this.

"Fully defined" sketch is something I am not aware of. I am pretty new to Inventor and CAD-ing in general but I am hungry to learn.

I am now searching for what "BORN Technique".

Thanks!

OK so I read up and learnt how to make fully constrained sketches. The new part attached to this post has all sketches fully constrained. However, that does not make the sketches come up on the browser. I guess there is some setting I need to turn on? BTW, it is just a "quick and dirty" demo part. It really is not used for anything.

As for BORN technique, I learnt about it also. Although I do not have a whole hour to invest watching the very detailed video you have on YouTube, I did skim through it and also look at other, shorter videos and also read some short articles. Seems to me, in a nutshell, BORN technique simply recommends us to draw on the three planes, nothing else. Also make the first sketch start at 000, the origin.

Thank you again for teaching me some new tricks 🙂

Once again, did you Attach the correct file?

I see only one sketch and no features in the latest file that you attached here?

Ooops! I am so sorry, you are correct. I attached the wrong file. I have two files which are similar in name

Part3.ipt and TestPart3.ipt

Here is the one which has 3 sketches, all fully constrained.

Uh oh,

I found numerous other issues...

How will this dimension be measured in the real world?

TheCADWhisperer_0-1697144090561.png

Sketch2 is not created using the BORN Technique.

Sketch3 is not created using the BORN Technique?

And...

In most cases I would use a Perpendicular constraint rather than a 90° dimension.

And I would likely use a Coincident constraint rather than a zero length dimension...

Well, sir, I totally understand you but BORN not the thing I am after right now (I totally get it that you, as an educator, see my sketch and say this is junk! ha ha!).....but the point of this thread was to find out how to get my sketches show up at the top, not hidden under extrusions which I have to expand tediously.

As for BORN: I am still learning the BORN technique and still do not understand certain things, like how things can be far away from the sketch plane and still be a part of a part. I must be missing something, so was watching this video...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpMrTyLLSfQ

I did go through your video, but I did not get what I am doing different than what you are saying in that video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyQHEKrT8bo&t=1944s

I am also reading this document (attached)....hoping to understand how to actually implement BORN

Ummm...ok, but in the 1 hr long video from you, where you show the BORN technique, I do NOT see sketches showing up above extrusions in the inventor you are running there. Am I missing something?

How about this: Can you give me an example of a .ipt where all the sketches are showing at the top level and after you expand the sketches, the extrusions show up. You did say earlier that you can make that happen, but you would like me to learn the BORN technique.

I am game for that, but hear me out .... I am starting to think that what I want is not really do-able. Read other people's posts, earlier in this thread. Maybe what you think that I want is something not really what I want.

I would like sketches shown above extrusions, like how Fusion 360 shows it, or at least separately.

Inventor is not Fusion 360. This programs have other interface and workflow.
