BOM Workflow for Weldments

So my typical workflow for transfer of info from engineering to purchasing:

  • CAD model has all items that are fabricated & purchased etc
  • I export the BOM from inventor into an excel spreadsheet
  • I paste the info into our purchasing system
  • Each part is its own line in the BOM

Weldments kind of break this system. For example - for a plate welded to a shaft collar, in Inventor this is a inseparable weldment (the shaft collar would never be replaced separate of the plate etc). Because its inseparable it doesn't create a line in the parts only BOM for the shaft collar, there is only one line item for the entire weldment. I have to manually add the shaft collar to the purchasing BOM.

Is there a way to make purchased parts show up in the parts only BOM even though they are in an inseparable weldment? I'd like to get away from manually having to add the purchased parts from weldments into the BOM to reduce the human error factor.

Hi! I must not have understood the issue correctly. Regarding your question, it seems to work fine for me. All purchased parts within a weldment assembly do get promoted to the top in the Part Only BOM view.

"Is there a way to make purchased parts show up in the parts only BOM even though they are in an inseparable weldment?"

Please share an example that is not working. It could be a bug.

Many thanks!

This was the solution I was looking for. After your comment I remembered I could change the BOM structure of the purchased part file to "Purchased Part" . I had it as normal by default. But when I updated it, the BOM was accurate as you stated.

I am coming from Solidworks and learning Inventor, so I appreciate your feedback.
