Best way to simplify a 3d model

Hi All,

i'm a newbie in Inventor 2017 and I have to use it to export 3D model in Plant 3D, but i'm in trouble due the size of the 3D model. The supplier sent me the step file of the pump (see attached file) and my goal is to simplify the model to be usable in plant 3D (200-300 kb instead of 6 MB). I didn't found a way, for example, to export only the external surface (i'm not interested to particular i need only the "Shape"). I have also tried with define envelopes under simplify but i lost the "information" of the flange that i need to use in plant 3d.

Anyone can suggest me the best way to simplify a 3D Model as a pump for example?

Thanks

It has been a while since I have imported anything complex into Inventor and in modern days there might be a better ways to simplify the model. But I used to open the model in AutoCAD and remove all the unwanted elements of the model in there. Then saving the modified model in Inventor friendly format.

Cheers,

Igor.

You can use the Shrinkwrap: (if you have just a part, insert it in an assembly)

Here you have some options to simplify your geometry:

Thanks @IgorMir and @Binga , through autocad isn't practical because i have various 3d model block. Binga i try with Shrinkwrap, playing also with the options, but the output file .adsk is always more than 1.2 MB (the step file original size 6.8 MB).

There is no possibility to modify and then export the 3D model as a sort of only a "3D surface" of the original 3D model?

Thanks both

You can try this:

- Make a derived part of the assembly. You can de-select small parts. Use multibody option, combining can be done later

- Look at each of the remaining bodies. You can delete faces (Heal option), or extrude outlines for getting only cylindrical shapes.

- Combine the result to a single body and save it as STEP.

- Re-import the STEP. After that you'll get a minimized solid.

Attach your initial file, and we can test

Thanks @WHolzwarth I will try your method but unfortunately for a new users as me is not so easy to make the various step.

I cannot also attach the file because is property of the supplier.

The best way to simplify a 3D model is by reducing its polygon count without compromising its overall shape and detail. This process, known as decimation or retopology, involves optimizing the model to use fewer polygons. You can achieve this using tools like Blender's Decimate Modifier or ZBrush's Decimation Master.

Additionally, ensure to remove any unnecessary details or hidden geometry, and use normal maps to retain surface detail without adding geometry. By simplifying your model efficiently, you can maintain quality while improving performance for real-time applications like gaming and VR.

If you're looking to showcase your optimized 3D models, consider using Pastelcube. This platform is designed for creators to sell high-quality assets while ensuring they reach a targeted audience interested in unique and detailed designs. Pastelcube offers an intuitive marketplace that can help you connect with buyers looking for simplified, game-ready models.

You can always just block it out by "hand", something like that shouldn't take more than 5 minutes... However, any modern" machine should be able to handle that just fine, so if you have to descriptive drawings or a product render you would obviously want the more detailed part.
