BALLOONS TO PARTS, NOT SUB ASSEMBLY

I have an assembly that has some sub assemblies in it.  i have the BOM set to "parts only", and ion the BOM and Parts List, i can see the individual components of the sub assemblies, which is what we want.  however, when trying to add a balloon to the sub assembly parts, it will only select the sub assembly itself, no the individual parts...

how do i link the balloons to the sub assembly parts?

thanks!

Hi @tmathieson ,

How did you set the BOM to parts ? Only in the BOM itself ? Did you put the partslist on the idw and the select parts only ?

Hi Tobias,  thanks for the reply.  i set the BOM to Parts Only, and the same for the Parts Lists.. SO THIS IS MY ASSEMBLY STRUCTURE....

  - TOP LEVEL

  - SUB #1 (UNDER TOP LEVEL)

  - SUB #2 (UNDER SUB #1)

so i want my balloons to pick up the components of SUB #2... here's the kicker...

in the TOP Level, the balloons work as i want, they pick up the components of SUB # 2 and label accordingly. BUT...

in a drawing view with just SUB #1, it won't work, the balloons keep attached to SUB #2,not the parts....

i have set all BOM structures to Parts, and same for parts lists...

after a bit more investigation, it seems to be relate to Model states (again...).  if i set my TOP Level to Master, it works correctly. and if i set it to another model state, it works correctly... but in the model state that i need, it doesn't......

all model states have the same settings for the BOM, and my Part Lists are correct...

Does it work if you set the Sub Assembly occurrence to Phantom?

To Echo What Ferrisb is saying,

If you can open up your assembly file and go under the tools tab, document settings, bill of materials tab, you can change the default bom structure to phantom from normal. This is likely something that might help.

When I put together assemblies in my drawings, I typically have various sub assemblies that I use - in my case it's 2 conduit pipe nipples with a union in the middle that have various lengths of nipples. I set the sub assemblies to phantom so when I put them into the final assembly when they show up in the BOM and the balloons they show up as independent lines/items. If I had the subassemblies set to the Normal BOM structure they would show up as just one item with the assembly name. I do have some parts with screws and other components that I keep in the normal structure so it can be an all encompassing item/part where others I want the details on what is used.

Just a quick edit on this one, when I'm creating my parts list I usually leave it as structured for the BOM view.

I hope this helps you out and good luck!
