Autodesk Inventor 2017 Freezing

Autodesk Inventor 2017 Freezing

I'm the tech support for a school using Inventor 2017. We upgraded to Windows 10 (Students are using the LTSB Version) and with it upgraded to 2017 since our out of date version wasn't functional due to .NET changes.

The software locks up in the middle of use occasionally (as few as 2 students a day, as many as 10). There does not seem to be a similarity in what the students are trying to do when it locks up. It does not appear to be a network connectivity issue, as the youtube video they are simultaneously watching has not been reported as freezing when the issue occurs. Additionally they can access all their network shares while frozen. The software does not allow you to click any menu or options, they do not even visually change to show they are being moused over. However, if you close the software from the taskbar (right click icon, close) it prompts you to save changes and does so successfully. This tells me its not a full crash, but some other issue.

We are using server licensing and have enough concurrent licenses to fill 5 classrooms while only 1 classroom uses the software. I have tried hard wiring the computers into ethernet and disabling the "Show My Home on startup" option. The latter was a fix listed for a similar issue by other internet people. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum.

My first thought is do your systems meet the requirements outlined here?

System requirements for Inventor 2017/inventor-products/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticl...

Next, are you up to date with all of your SP's?

...my second thought is,

have you installed Service Pack(s)...

Oops, did not read Scott's reply to the end.  I see that was his second thought as well.

The devices meet the minimum and often the recommended as well. They have i7-3520M CPUs, 8GB RAM, NVIDIA NVS 5400M dedicated video, and a couple hundred free GB of storage. We are using the 2017 SP1 release, build 196. As far as I can find in my Autodesk Update Management portal, this is the most recent build.

To me it sounds like a dialog is off the screen..   But I wouldn't think 10 different machines would have this issue...   Or that it would allow you to save.   Do you ever get Not-Responding message?  Where are the student files being stored?  Are they sharing information between each other?

For a given machine that is locking up/freezing..  Run the Inventor Reset Utility (its part of the Inventor installation and can be found under the Windows Start Menu for Autodesk/Inventor section

Are you using 3D Connexion Devices?

Do you have MS Excel installed on these machines?

Are students using Project (*.ipj) files?  (You will probably have to ask the instructor about that one.)

The machines do have Excel, are not using 3D Connexion devices, and are not getting not responding messages but I have had a couple say that Inventor has crashed only after letting me save successfully. The other pieces of information I'll be able to collect the next time it happens. Thanks for the help so far everyone.

Hi! This one sounds like graphics related. Could you do a simple test on a machine reproducing the behavior? Start up Inventor and go to Tools -> Application Options -> Hardware -> set the option to Conservative mode -> Ok. Does it still freeze?

Many thanks!

I applied a fix a couple weeks ago but wanted to wait to confirm it worked before posting. Although the issue did not show the usual signs of video driver crashing, forcing an update to the video driver appears to have resolved the issue.
