Attempts to intersect a spline in X-Y with circle in Y-Z fail

Hi-

I'm working on a sweep and having trouble intersecting a circle (profile) with the path.

Here's the spline in the X-Y plane.

The problem is that I can't move the profile easily to coordinates that would intersect.

Hi Sophi,

You did not attach the file. I can only guess what the issue might be. Inventor is a history-based 3D parametric solid modeler. There is an oreder of creating things. I guess you created the spline on a sketch attached to XY, followed by the circle on a sketch attached to YZ plane. Here is what you need to do.

1) Move End of Part bar to below the spline sketch.

2) Workplane -> pick the spline and pick the endpoint of the spline.

3) Move End of Part bar to the bottom.

4) Right-click on the circle sketch -> Redefine Sketch -> pick the newly created workplane. Now you should be able to reposition the circle.

The other workflow to consider is to create a UCS. Simply drop a UCS in the model space (without picking any geometry). This self-contained coordinate system allows you to create sketch normal to orthogonal planes within the UCS. Also, the UCS can be easily moved or rotated around.

Many thanks!

Create a new workplane at the endpoint of the spline perpendicular to the end of the spline for your circle sketch.

or

Create a Workpoint at the intersection of the spline and the YZ plane (before the circle sketch) and then Project Geometry in the circle sketch.

or

end all doubt and attach your *.ipt file here and someone will demonstrate using your file.

I've attached the *.ipt.

Many thanks for the responses, I'll see if I can work with them.

Ideally, I'd just be able to move the center point of the circle to intersect at -0.505, -0.,379 (the point at which it should intersect the spline...

Are those X and Y coordinates, as in (X,Y,Z) or (-.505, -.379, ?)

There is no geometry at those coordinates in the file that you attached?

Is this a school assignment?

Are you working from instructions with more information about the design intent?

Hi-

This is a personal project so no real parameters 🙂

I got the coordinates by hovering over the point I wanted to intersect. I see now that I'm not snapping to the actual coordinates, just getting in the general area. Yes this is in the XY plane. Thanks!
