Associative sketches (frame generator)

Hi,

this must be simple but I can't figure it out how to do.

Say I want to create s simple frame from the part with two 2D sketches and one 3D sketch that define shelf-like frame (see below). How can I make one 2D sketch to be "master" and make the second 2D sketch associative to that master. So that if I change any dimension in master sketch it will reflect in change of assocaited sketch(es) as well? Imagine I create a shelf with 20 vertical segments and will behave like one. Possible?

Note: I tried to use (adaptive) Project geometry from one sketch to another but than connection lines in 3D sketch won't work.

Thanks,

Goran

Hi! Certainly, you could use adaptive in this case but I think you would be better off using skeletal modeling. What you need is a skeletal part containing a master 2D Sketch. This sketch will drive other 2D or 3D sketches within the same skeletal part. You should make the master sketch invisible after you project the sketch geometry from the master sketch to individual sketches. Lastly, create frame members based on these individual sketches in the skeletal part.

Would it work? If not, could you attach an example here so we can understand the behavior better.

Many thanks!

I use the method you are describing (drawing one "panel" of the frame in a 2D sketch, projecting it to a second sketch, connecting them with a 3D sketch) in nearly every frame I build.  Can you be more specific as to the problem you are having when you try to do it?

Edit:

Also, a little terminology clarification for you:  The projected geometry from one sketch to another within the same part creates associativity, not Adaptivity.  The term "Adaptive" only applies to associativity between two different part files.

John,

thank you very much for your reply. I tried again and everything works as expected now.

I have no clue what I did last time but it must be I made some stupid mistake. In 3D sketch, I simply coldn't snap to the point in the sketch associated.

Thanks,

Goran
