Associative Model State

When placing an .ipt with multiple model states, what exactly does checking the "Associative" box do?

The associative box is for the design view.  When checked, any change you make to the design view in the part will show up in the assembly.  So if you change the color of one of the faces it will automatically change the face color in the assembly.
