Assembly Issue

Hi All, I am having some issues with my assembly not staying on the initial face I positioned it, I initially position the piece flat so that the front face is positioned on the frontal face view but as I add items the whole thing seems to move and now the front of the assembly has to be viewed between the bottom and the back face, is there a way to ock your assembly to a face? Thank you Jamie

Do you have your part grounded?

Thank you for you're reply, no I didn't select grounding, can you do it to an assembly mid way through or do I have to start it again? I normally use Solidworks and this feature isn't required.

Hi, one possibility, it would be that you select the piece you want to fix and apply

However, as a recommendation, the part to be set should have the planes of origin coinciding with the planes of origin of the assembly, for more comfortable uses in future actions. For this reason it would be advisable that place new component and on the screen right click and select

I hope you can solve your problem. regards!

Inventor should ground the first part in an assembly.

The grounded part in the browser shows a pin in front.

With RMB you can ground and unground any part in your iam.

Also:

In <Tools> <Applications> <Assembly>

You can put on "place and ground first component"

With your suggestion my issue has been resolved, thank you, I have started the assembly again and done it properly using grounding and grounding the initial part. once you get around this issue it is pretty easy to use.

Jamie,

First off, welcome to the forums.

As shown, in your applications settings under the Assembly tab, you can select (or deselect) the automatic place and grounding of the first part you insert into an assembly.

Personally I have this set to ground that first part and in the odd instance where I don't want it grounded, I can simply either deselect it before I start the assembly, or leave it, insert the first part, then RMB and deselect "Grounded" in the pop-up menu. Then I constrain the part as needed.

Be sure to constrain your parts in your assemblies or you'll find really odd things starting to happen as you edit it. Make constraints your friend, it'll save you a lot of headaches.

Another method is to select Place Grounded at Origin from the context (right click) menu when placing a component:

The context menu also gives you the ability to rotate by 90° increments before placement.  I routinely use this context menu when building an assembly.
