Align model in Inventor vs Autocad

 We have a situation here at my work where we receive part models from our customers (iges and step files) and most of the time they are not aligned to any plane (square) nor at the WCS origin point (usually some car body location).

In order for us to accommodate our Quality department and the CMM operator we have to put the imported part flat on the XY plane and also move it using the part B datum to the WCS 0,0,0 origin.

I can easily accomplish this in AutoCad by creating a USC along the features I need and then Ctrl-C the model. I then return to the WCS and paste the model back into the drawing and move the point on the model to the WCS 0,0,0 origin.

When I export this model it is now aligned on the XY planes the way I want it and has a 0,0,0 origin. This allows our CMM operator to import the model to the fixtures he has designed for it.

Sorry for the long explanation. I just can't figure out a way to accomplish this using Inventor. Is there a way?

Since that was written, there is also the Direct Edit tool that will allow you to do this, and I think it might be a bit more straight forward:

Hi! Are you familiar with Inventor assembly? If yes, actually there is a workflow you could consider using. If all geometry is in a part, you could use Make Components command to push them into individual parts in an assembly. Or, simply import the source file as an assembly. Next, create a UCS in the assembly at 0,0,0. For the parts you want to relocate, edit or open the part and create a UCS (at the correct 0,0,0). Now go back to the assembly and create a constraint called Constraint Set by pick the assembly UCS and the part UCS. If you need them to become a part, simply derive the assembly to a part.
