AI Renderings

Has any used the AI for rendering models vs trying to do it in Studio/max or other software? If so, is there a free version for trials and what luck have you had with it?

"AI" for rendering is interesting... at best it would give a generic look, either really detailed with texture scales way off or super clean with no surface detail. I know a lot of people are on the "AI" kick, but a good render is something that is designed, especially out of CAD. Any geometry from CAD comes in as triangle poly's. From there, if the geometry is not UV'd, you can map materials to it with either projection mapping or triplaner mapping. But to get a good render with believable surface textures it is highly recommended that you take the time to UV your geo and "design" your textures. If you are texturing steel it process increases a level of difficulty. Steel is reflective, so the textures you see under a given lighting scenario will change as the lighting or environment changes. Dielectic materials are the easiest to get started with, (plastic, wood, cloth, etc).

Here's a couple of examples, one has a diffuse type copper coating applied to it, while the other is stainless steel rendered in a white environment, the white environment washes out all the textures.

IMO, "AI" will never account for any of that, it will give a generic result, complied from generic examples, (as long as you have an internet connect and existing examples are available to copy from.
