Adding Text to a idw freezes the system and closes without saving

Hi, I am having issues adding any kind of "text" to my DWG in Inventor.  When I add it- it causes Inventor to freeze up and crash or it will take at least... maybe 3-5 mins to accept it. It's when adding a "Text" , "Leader Text" even "weld symbols" that it happens to.

Once- I even let it sit overnight (bc I didn't want to loose my work) and when I came back in the next day- it was still frozen. It only does this maybe 85-90% of the time  however.

Is there a quick solution for this?

I have the right software (64) , I've tried updating it, restarting my computer, starting a new dwg, and copying and pasting to try to bypass it all with no positive results.

Any guidance would be helpful seeing as I'm on a tight schedule and this is taking way longer than it should.

Does this happen only with older drawings you are revising, or is this happening also with new ones made from a newer template? Are your templates migrated to the latest version? What version of Inventor do you use? Are you using any weird fonts for this text or simply Arial or other simple ones? Have you tried the same operation after an Inventor Reset? Have you tried changing the Inventor shortcut by right-click > Properties > Compatibility > Run this program in compatibility? What is your total RAM for the PC? You mention IDW in the subject of this post but then talk about DWG... are you able to attach here any small sample of a test drawing exhibiting the same behavior? Do you have any other colleagues that can edit your problematic drawings without the same issue? What kind of edits did you make to your Text Styles (or none at all) that could cause differences, if in your case the default (out of the box) templates may not show the same issue (try using a pure/default Inventor template)?

@jimMGH37

Can you reproduce this issue in a simple dummy set of files and Attach the files here that exhibit this behavior?

Are you using a 3D Connexion device.

If yes, what happens if you disable or Calibrate the device?

Does this happen only with older drawings you are revising, or is this happening also with new ones made from a newer template? WE RECENTLY PURCHASED THE 24 VS OF INVENTOR (HAD THE 21 VS) AND IT JUST STARTED DOING THIS WHEN WE UPGRADED- SO I HAVE MADE A NEW ASSEMBLY WITH A NEW PRINT WITH FACTORY SETTINGS THAT ARE ENABLED ON THE DRAWING Are your templates migrated to the latest version? DOES THIS AUTOMATICALLY UPDATE WHEN WE UPGRADED THE SYSTEM? IF NOT- HOW TO DO SO? What version of Inventor do you use? 2024 Are you using any weird fonts for this text or simply Arial or other simple ones? JUST SIMPLE ORIGINAL FONTS THATS PRESET. IT DOES IT WHEN ADDING WELD SYMBOLS SOMETIMES AS WELL, HOWEVER NOT EVEY TIME LIKE NORMAL TEXT.  Have you tried the same operation after an Inventor Reset? HOW DO YOU "RESET" INVENTOR? UNINSTALL IT AND REINSTALL?? Have you tried changing the Inventor shortcut by right-click > Properties > Compatibility > Run this program in compatibility? I WILL TRY THIS IN A FEW AND LYK THE OUTCOME What is your total RAM for the PC?
Processor Intel(R) Xeon(R) W-2245 CPU @ 3.90GHz 3.91 GHz
Installed RAM 32.0 GB (31.7 GB usable)
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
You mention IDW in the subject of this post but then talk about DWG... are you able to attach here any small sample of a test drawing exhibiting the same behavior? I AM USED TO CALLING IT A DWG FROM PREVIOUS PROGRAMS- SO JUST MIS TYPED IT. AND YES I WILL TRY TO ATTACH ONE. Do you have any other colleagues that can edit your problematic drawings without the same issue? NO, I AM THE ONLY ONE WHO USES THE SOFTWARE HERE What kind of edits did you make to your Text Styles (or none at all) that could cause differences, if in your case the default (out of the box) templates may not show the same issue (try using a pure/default Inventor template)? IT ALL SHOULD BE DEFAULT AS I DONT REMEMBER CHANGING ANYTHING... BUT I WILL GO AND RESET ALL OF THEM AND GIVE IT A
TRY.  THANK YOU FOR YOUR RESONSE. I WILL TRY THESE HERE IN A SEC AND IF THE ISSUE STILL PERSIST- THEN I WILL ADD A IDW FOR YOU  TO REVIEW AND SEE IF IT DOES THE SAME TO YOU. THANKS!!!

Hi! Please install all critical Windows updates and also install the latest graphics driver. Install 2024.1.1 which has been released just recently.

Many thanks!

Inventor Reset (first export your current settings as a backup via Tools > App. Options > General > Export):

https://www.autodesk.com/support/technical/article/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/How-to-use-Invento...

To migrate your templates (if you are not using the ones installed with 2024), open any old template and save them, but keep one of these settings on so you are either prompted or automatically save (you should switch to "No" and "Don't Save" after as default):

Can you send me a link to the newer vs?
It just happened to me again but it would be hard for me to capture it when it happens when it don't do it all the time. Here is a snippet of the dimension I just tried to alter that caused it to freeze up.

Also- is there a shortcut key that can auto save my work (like a f1 or similar) when it does freeze up? Or how do you turn on the auto save option?

Save the file before you add text.

If it crash while adding text, attached the saved file here.

Attach the idw, iam and ipt used in the idw.

"Pack and Go" the idw and "Package as zip"

Attach the zip here.

Hi Jim,

2024.1.1 update is available either via Autodesk Access or manage.autodesk.com. Another possibility is that certain accumulative workflows leads to some unknown memory leak in GDI objects (UI related). Windows sets an upper limit of number of GDI objects is allowed for a given application (Inventor). You may bump up the limit to bypass the issue for now. Please take a look at the following articles.

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/sysinfo/gdi-objects

https://devblogs.microsoft.com/oldnewthing/20210831-00/?p=105624

Many thanks!
