add parts list column for name of assembly drawing

Hi all. Had great luck here yesterday so I thought I would try again today...

I have several frame generator assemblies. When i want a full BOM for all assemblies required in the job, i start a new assembly and place all the other assemblies in it as many times as they are required for the particular job. When I export my overall assembly BOM to excel, I would like it to note which drawing assembly each part came from. I thought i might be able to create a custom iProperty that would list the name of the assembly, but i can't figure out how to do that. any body have any ideas or should i just export the bom for each assembly manually? or maybe my answer is iLogic code to automatically export the BOM for me... hmmmm....

well, i guess i have several avenues. if anyone is already doing anything similar i would love to hear thoughts.

thanks ever much.

drawing assembly? please clarify what that means

Do you mean drawing or assembly?

Is the drawing named the same as the assembly?

Give us a simple example using this sample indented bom..

(Main assembly)

-Sub assy 1

--Part 1

--Part 2

-Sub assy 1

--part 3

--part 4

Well, I make a frame (using FG) which is an assembly, then a create a drawing for the assembly (same name) and put the parts list on it. I add maybe a few purchased components, and the guys in the shop have a drawing of the frame they have to put together. I also tag each part with a unique identifier partmark, that is done manually right now (I have a tag in the iProperties of the custom published extrusions, a prefix for each profile then a new number for each different length required throughout the job).

I need to be able to get a list of all the lengths and quantities required for metal order, then for cutting on the saw and machining on the cnc. I have gotten that by exporting the BOM from an overall assembly where i place each frame. Not sure my options on dealing with this, but the shop needs to know which piece goes to which subassembly. trying to strategize now, figuring out how to leverage what i have against what i need - entire job BOM and a listing per each frame. Maybe i break it down in Excel?

don't know if this helps you help me or not. sorry, afraid clarity isn't my best thing this morning.

So your exported bom (if you exported indented) should state which assembly each piece is used for already..

You have a drawing of each assembly..

I'm struggling to see what the real problem is and how Inventor could be used to assist you..

Sounds like you just have a pile of cut pieces and don't have a system to get those pieces sorted and picked for the appropriate assembly build.. Which to me this is not an Inventor issue..

But as you stated.. clarity isn't your strong point and mind reading isn't mine 🙂

"seems" to me like you just need to tag each physical piece with its part number somehow after machining and place them in a stocking location so the assemblers can easily pick the pieces they need for each frame they are building using the drawing showing that frame assembly.

Or change your cutting procedure so they work on one sub at a time and put all the parts in a bin and when they have cut all the parts for that specific assembly they move that bin over to assembly and tag it with the assembly part number those pieces are used for..

Then they start cutting for the next assembly..

At my work.. Everything has a part number..

Every thing we build gets a "pick list" generated for the assemblers to go to the stock room and pick the parts they need for that job..

Its simple..

what is this "exported (Indented) of which you speak? it may be that i just don't know enough about my exporting options? i guess my questions are just forming, too vague for clear answers. sorry to involve you in my process, apparently i am just thinking out loud. i use inventor to create the cnc machining for the saw and the cnc... i am looking to leverage that work into something the guy on the floor can use. it seems simple to me as well, but here they tend to throw common sense simple right out the proverbial window...

well, TGIF.

Hope your weekend is great. thanks... and if you could just clue me on the indented thing, that would be a big help...!!

thanks

Take a look at the BOM Editor for your top level assembly.  Enable the Structured Tab.  RMB on it, select View Properties, and choose All Levels.  You should be able to expand each sub-assembly and see the lower-level components.

Take a look at the Parts Only tab too.

One/both of those views might be what you want.

You should be able to show both BOM views on separate Parts Lists on a idw/dwg.

If you are using Frame Generator for your structural parts, take a look at the Cut List section on this page from the help file: http://help.autodesk.com/view/INVNTOR/2014/ENU/?guid=GUID-97068BF9-83A2-4708-B935-B6842E70932C

No problem at all..

Thats why this forum is so great.. Many years of experience, many different industries,etc.. here and we all have certain "tricks" we have picked up along the way and don't mind sharing to help others out..

Swalton covered the indented above so hopefully thats all you were missing..

And glad he posted the "cut list" stuff too.. You might want to search for "Autodesk inventor cut list" on Google (because Google is better than the search on this forum) and see what others are doing.. Some get pretty fancy and there are tricks you might find work far better than just a bom export..

Lots of frame generator tricks around here..

And I'll leave you with a "Google trick" you can use in case you didn't know

use site:forums.autodesk.com to narrow your results only to stuff found on that site..

So enter this in the google search box..
