Adaptivity not working properly

I have 3 parts in an assembly and can't get the adaptivity functionality to work.  I have "enable associative edge/loop as well as associative sketch geometry checked in application options.  I can turn on adaptive in part level in model tree but the sketches themselves don't have the option in shortcut menu.  When I go to project geometry to reference the edge of one part is places lock constraints rather then referencing the edge itself.  Since it's a locked constraint If the edge moves the projected geometry will not which is not what I expect out of it.  Hopefully this all makes sense?

I have attach a pack n go, the web should be the driving feature and the curved extruded profiles should always follow the contour of the web If it ever changes in curvature.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Jerry,

I took a quick look at your files. I think I know the confusion. Adaptive does not work just by making the part adaptive. Think of "Adaptive" as a switch. The part-level switch allows the adaptive solve to go into the part. However, there has to be an adaptive sketch or an adaptive feature to adapt. Otherwise, it is a null op.

In your case, Outer Flange and Inner Flange are adaptive. But, none of the features are adaptive. Which sketch do you want to be adaptive?

Another issue I see is that you should not have all components being adaptive. It can create an adaptive cycle (A -> B -> C -> A).

Many thanks!

I've stayed away from Adaptivity all my years using Inventor.

Instead, I use skeletal sketch modeling and some derived surfaces and work features + parameters.I find that works best and conserves precious computing resources on big projects.

By way of contrast, when doing surfacing (which I'm no expert at), I use all kinds of different methods, b/c surfacing is a different animal than parametric solids modeling.

Maybe you can explore another route to accomplish you objectives?

@cadman777, @J.Oye

look here. https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/inventor-forum/projected-geometry-losing-its-reference-all-the-time/t...
I told you about my methods for adaptability. Maybe you will like it too. The old adaptability we were used to 15 years ago no longer works and will no longer work. The only way to do this now is through the "Copy Object".

Yes, I watched that video the other day. It was in Russian so I didn't quite get what you were doing. But your method looks like the same as the advice Johnson gave in another thread a few weeks ago. Brilliant idea! He used CopyObject in the assembly when editing an individual part, then opened that part separately and used Sculpt to remove material.

However when I tried it on a FrameGenerator assembly with 5 sub-assemblies for matching the bolt holes between parts in different sub-assemblies (copied hole surfaces from one part to another, extended the surfaces through the mating part, subtracted the surfaces from the mating part), it eventually caused assembly constraints to do strange things and to stop working. It threw my assembly into chaos, scattering some parts all over the place, and the only way I could fix it was to delete all the Copied surfaces and do it 'the hard way' (which is the way I normally do it anyway). It also caused the computer to get REAL SLOW, b/c it appears to be system hog. Also, when using it to transfer holes that don't go all the way through the part, it doesn't work. So I resorted to adding a WorkAxis and WorkPoint to locate and drive holes, which needed Parameter Links to the Parent part for hole pattern dimensions and quantities. It was DOABLE, but not simple. Using this method to do what I want to do with STRUCTURAL CONNECTION bolt holes creates a myriad of added work scenarios, depending on what you are trying to accomplish. So I just quit trying to use it.

Once again, Inventor has a TOKEN FUNCTION that's TOTALLY UNDER-DEVELOPED, and that won't work IN PRODUCTION design and drafting. I was HOPING this could be a method of transferring bolt holes between individual parts in STRUCTURAL projects. But alas...VERY disappointing!

Cheers...

Videos are slowly pressing icons. So look at them, they are the same in all languages. Note what I selected in the "Copy Object" feature. Then everything works stably. So far stable, I don't know what will happen after the next Inventor update

My version of Inventor is much older so the GUI is not the same.

I tried finding a 2020 GUI for CopyObject on YT but couldn't.

I also tried to find a 2020 GUI for CopyObject on Autodesk's KB web site, but as always, the 'Help' is not helping!

They show you only the DB icons, not the whole DB.

What idiocy! Who thinks this stuff up anyway?
If it was me, I would make the HELP show the DB, and then the user can hover-over or click on the individual icons to get info on their name, what they do, and how the user uses it. Then I'd have a few of the most common examples on how to apply it. Showing the WHOLE DB is common sense 'intuitive', DUH! Living in reality is quite a different matter than living behind a computer screen. I hear that all the time from fabricators when dealing with engineers and architects!

So it's like I said: I can't read Russian.

Didn't understand what version of inventory you have?
