Adaptive feature not updating

Anonymous

I'm trying to model a cable whip between a fixed point and a moving end of an actuator. I make the cable whip adaptive and do a loft or sweep to a point on the moving arm and everything appears to work correctly. However, once I move the arm, the work plane moves off in another direction. It's like the work plane isn't constrained to the face I created it on. When I try to "redefine it" it stays put and won't update to the new position. The yellow circle is the intended landing spot for the sweep.

Instead of trying to Redefine your workplane, try editing the constraints.  In an assembly, work features are essentially just specialized components and are constrained to other work features and components.

The cable whip will be in a different shape at any given position of the
actuator. It will have a predetermined length, but there actually shouldn't
be any constraints in the assembly. Just a part that adapts to the new
location of the sketch planes.

Hi There should be a logical reason behind the behavior. Either the sketch is not adaptive or the change from outside of the cable part does not trigger adaptive solve properly. Please attach the files (iam and ipt) here so we can take a look.

Many thanks!

Here are the files.  Basically I want to make a part adapt so that it changes it's shape (like a cable does) when an assembly moves.  I've already noticed that I won't be able to do this easily, as I have to suppress the adaptive part during the move, and then unsuppress it to get it to regenerate.

I'm a new learner on this platform (Inventor 2016), though I've had 10 years on another and this type of action was simpler so I'm hoping I'm missing something simple.

Hi! Many thanks for attaching the files! Could you tell me which constraint or component you are trying to move?

The cylinder is flexible.  If you pull on the part named EOAT or the cylinder rod, it will extend.  I'm trying to show how a cable will move in the an assembly and this represents it fairly well.

Hi! I am still trying to understand the system. Here is what you could do. Right-click on Mate:5 -> Drive -> check Drive Adaptivity. Let it play. You should see the cable deform in real time.

I guess you were trying to drag EOAT manually and it does not work. It is because such movement incurs numerous change in shape. The transaction model is not well established yet. We have heard the request of being able to drag adaptive part and see it deform accordingly. We are researching for solutions.

Many thanks!

My question is simplified as this:  If you move the mating component (the eoat part in this case), along the plane (work plane 1 in this case), all is ok.  You can suppress the "cable base" part, move the parts, unsuppress "cable base" and it will update to be in the new position.  However, if you move "eoat" part into a non-coplanar position as "work plane 1", said plane does not update to that new position.  In otherwords, the "adaptive" work plane isn't actually operating as adaptive.  The system will still project the sketch onto the work plane, but not relocate the work plane.  Therefore behaves not like it should.

There were a few issues I seen take a look at the wire or whip I changed it up and also I put a drive in the cylinder.

Also I sent back files with changes.

One more thing..

I am sure I will get beat up for saying this but......

Try to stay away from offset constraints when you want to make things adaptive.. In fact try to stay away from them altogether...

You will never find one of my assemblies with a offset constraint..

I have seen more issues with adaptive and offset constraint.

Oh and this was just a fast fix I would do a few things different to control some things...

Thanks James!  Lastly, as it relates to this.  How do you set the length of a spline?  I know you can dimension the length of an arc, but I haven't seen this for spline in my searching.  I was hoping to set the length of the hose (or cable) and then move it to see how it ends up.

I'm not trying to do a full simulation, but do a check to make sure I have enough length.

Thanks again for your help!

By using the nodes..

Hi Johnson,

What can cause "change from outside does not trigger adaptivity to solve"? I have this issue where construction geometry is adaptive to outside skeleton, but does not follow that skeleton. Here is the picture which is showing that projected lines stay behind the profile.

Hi! This is a file-specific behavior. It is probably due to some corrupted geometry or cyclic dependency or a bug in update notification. Try this real quick. Go to Manage -> Rebuild All. Does it work? If yes, it is likely an update notification bug (or there is an adaptive loop).

Please share the files here or send them to me directly [email protected]. I can take a look and see why it behaves this way.

Many thanks!
