Accessing files on network

Hi, I realise Vault handles all file access issues but unfortunately, the current situation here is that not even Vault Basic is being installed. Now we have a situation where 2 people are working on the same project and can open the same file on the network without any read only messaging.

Is there a way for us to lock the network file from within Inventor (like what Vault does) when we open our files? I found some iLogic that changes the file to read only but then we can't save our work.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Although two users can open the same file on inventor only one of them can save.

Are these 2 people in the same room or able to communicate through email or messenger,etc...? 

If so, solve the issue with human to human communication..

"Hey Bob I'm going to change that flange now"....

"Ok Dave. Thats fine"...

Why are 2 people working on the same files? 

As shown above you will get an error to alert the user but you risk lost time/work with the current process you are doing. 

Vault basic can be installed quite easily...

What @mcgyvr said is correct.  If you are going to work collaboratively without the help of Vault (which my company does as well), it requires very close communication between the users as to what they have open at any given time.

At my company, it's not a problem the majority of the time, as we are usually 1 engineer/project.  However, when we do collaborate on larger projects, it can become a problem very quickly.  Clear communication between the users is key.

One thing you can do to help mitigate this problem is for each person to be working on different subassemblies, and both to know what the other is doing.  If there is to be any change to what you are working on, even if it is not what you think the other guy is working on, inform him anyway just to be sure you're not getting in each other's way.
