2D sketch: how to set "no 3D background" like in Catia?

Hello everybody,

I am experienced in working with Catia V5, but I like Inventor more and more since I've started working with it about 2 years ago.

One thing I find very annoying in Inventor thought is that, when I am creating / editing a 2D sketch (in 3D environment), I am not able to hide the 3D background or to dimm it (like in Catia), which is making very difficult to avoid selecting 3D edges instead of sketch elements...

I am currently using Inventor Professional 2020, but I'm still not able to find a way to hide the 3D background while working in a sketch, or at least to make de 3D geometry "not pickable".

Am I missing something here? It cannot (or shouldn't) be too difficult to do it, right?

Tools...application options..sketch tab.. uncheck any of the "autoproject" settings.

Thanks, but unfortunately that had no influence in my case... I can still see and select any of the 3D edges (and some of them are also partially covering my sketch).

F7 to slice graphics down to sketch plane..

The autoproject stuff should prevent selection of previously created features into your sketch plane.. 

We may be talking about different issues here so as stated please show a visual example (screencast,etc..) so we are all clear on what you want..

If you are editing the sketch in place, you can avoid selection edges from other components by making other components Disabled (right-click on the components- uncheck Enabled).

This only applies if editing in-place in an assembly.  I believe the OP is asking about faces/edges in the part file where the sketch is being edited.

Thanks for your answers.

I've attached 3 screenshots with views from sketcher in Catia V5 and Inventor, for comparison:

- Catia V5 "low light" --> you can see the 3D in background but cannot select anything from it, only geometry from the current sketch can be selected;

- Catia V5 "no 3D background" --> you don't see the 3D at all - useful when working in context of very complex assy

- Inventor sketch, where you can (always?) select everything from 3D (also by mistake) ...

I hope I could explain my problem a little better now.

Hi! I see it now. You would like to have clean sketching view without any body geometry. This can also be done by turning off solid body and surface body visibility. Go to Solid Bodies folder -> right-click -> uncheck Visibility to make the bodies invisible. Repeat it for Surface Bodies folder.

Yes...

Actually for me it would be more useful to see all body geometries in "low light" in the background, as reference, but not pickable, so just being able to select the geometry from the sketch.

I can remember, in Catia V4 there were 3 states you could choose from: 

- "show" - so you could see and select geometry

- "no pick" - so you could see, but not select geometry

- "no show" - so the geometry was hidden and not visible and therefor not being able to be selected.

Ok, I can uncheck the Visibility for the bodies, I've just looked for a dedicated "switch" from within the sketch for that.
