2 parts lists for one assembly

I want to be able to have 2 separate parts lists that refer to one assembly file.  The reason for this is I have my traditional parts list that I use to balloon all the components in my assembly, but I also have a custom parts list that has a custom column in it that is used for ballooning on a different sheet.  This list is used to create decals that get put on the pieces for ease of identifying and assembling parts in the field.

Right now I'm putting a parts list on 2 sheets and using my custom list on sheet 2.  The problem is that I need to expand this list to include sub-components and when I expand it on the 2nd sheet it also expands it on the 1st sheet.  I would like to avoid having to go back to the 1st sheet and hiding all the extra parts that are not needed there.

What if you were to create another parts list style for the second in the styles manager?

I have never done what you are describing, but my thinking is if you have two completely different parts list style pointed to one assembly, the changes would be independent.

Ok, then what if you were to make your assembly an Iassembly with the only difference being the description.

Could you not create 2 different view reps with each view rep containing the parts you need. The use filter setting, in the parts list to select the the parts list for each view rep. Select  "Limit QTY" to visible components only to ensure you have the correct quantity.

Can you set your filter to where it shows ballooned items only, that way you dont have to control visibility?

With the iAssembly it only supports 1st level BOM views.  I need all levels.

If I set it to only show ballooned items I have the same problem.  Since I am ballooning some items that are in the sub-assemblies, I still have to turn the visibility off on the 1st sheet.

Can you not create just a decal assembly? Where you place in the overall assembly, make that component reference, then add all the decals at that level so you only have a parts lists of just decals?

Hi Guys,

To over come iAssembly BOM's limitation is to place the iAssembly member in another assembly so all levels are available. Regarding having Structured BOM and PartOnly BOM of an assembly shown in the same drawing file, it is generally blocked. It is because the item numbers can be duplicate and the balloons can be confusing.

If you still want to have both PartsLists (Structured BOM and PartOnly BOM) in one drawing, there is a well-known backdoor access. Create one PartsList on one sheet. Next start a new drawing. Insert the PartsList of the other type on the new drawing sheet. Copy the sheet back to the old drawing. You will have two PartsLists in the same idw/dwg file.

I'm not looking for a parts only parts list.  The first sheet will only show the 1st level parts list and the second sheet will show a multi-level parts list, but only some of the assemblies will be expanded.

I have found a work around.  I took my assembly and placed it into another assembly, then I used this new assembly for my multi-level parts list.  This is better than the way I was doing it, but it does require another assembly file.
