Win XP 64 and Error 7.1.29

I am installing 3DS Max ver 4 on a new system running Win XP 64. On startup, 3DS reports
"A license error has occurred. Please restart your system to initialize the license management system. If this problem continues, contact your system administrator or authorized dealer.

Error [7.1.29]"

and then a second message -

"The software license failed to initialize, [Error 7]"

I tried to installed the License Manager RTS Update and got the following error -

"The image file C:\ . . . .\My Downloads\RTC\CdSetup.exe is valid, but is for a machine type other than the current machine."

The machine is a Dell Precision 670, Dual 3 gig processors, 2 gig ram, 60 gb SATO h/d, Quadro FX 3400 w/256 Mb, all running on Win XP 64.

Can anybody help me?

Max 4 was designed to be compatible with Win98 and NT 4. Win XP 64 is
almost nine years ahead of that. I very much doubt that you can make the
max 4 work on this OS, unless there's some special compatibility mode you
can set up. The error [xx.1.29] refers specifically to the licensing
drivers, which are tied to the OS.

If you can reinstall it with a network license instead of the standalone,
you might have better luck -- but still, max has many close ties to the OS.
Some people are having problems with max 7 on Win64, much less three major
revisions prior...

You can try the demo version of max 7 here:

Max 8 has been announced, and it doesn't even explicitly support Win64.

Wel , , , , yeah. I kinda figured it was the licensing drivers. My software is only about 3.5 years old, the copyright on the disk says 2001. what sort of ROI is that? Versioning is market hype, designed to sell more software, this works just fine for what I do with it. Heck, I guess I messed up when I bought a new machine.

I am wondering if new software would work, it wouldn't update the license drivers. Anybody know how much this is gonna cost me? Any garuntees that anything i do for this will work?

I doubt if you'll find guarantees anywhere. The best guidelines for success
are the hardware and software requirements that are posted for each product.
As I said, even max 8 doesn't list Win64 as a supported OS. Some people
have reported success with max 7 and Win64. You can check out the
discussion on the max web board here (see the Hardware-OS conference on the
max board):
http://support.discreet.com

And you can try the trial, as I suggested.

Thank you, but I can't earn a living with trial software. And may I remind you once again, with a little less subtlety this time, that it is the license manager, not the software that is the problem so far. Its clear to see that it can't generate the numbers it needs to ensure the software is legit, no matter that the serial # and cd key were input and accepted. Or that ACAD2006 is installed and working on the same machine. IMHO if Microsoft can get its software validation working why can't AutoDesk, its not like Microsoft Office costs $4,000 - Oh jeeeze, I just realized . . . . I can't earn a living with this software either.

Unfortunately, 3ds max 4 was released about 9 years prior to ACAD2006 and
Win64. It's nearly impossible to create future compatibility.

You might try to install in using compability mode. I'm not 100% sure it is
still in x64 because my x64 System is at home but if you right click on the
executable and choose properties you may be able to install uning the run in
compatabilty mode setting.
