Transfer file from new Maya to old Maya?

I'm having issues opening my file in an older version of Maya. My school uses Maya 2015 and I use 2013. I've tried saving it as an MA file and it still doesn't work. It always opens a blank scene.

I downloaded the free student version of Maya and all I want to do is extrude an edge line in a face to make extra faces, but no matter what I do, in the newer version, it automatically does the extrusion, then takes it completely outside the object. Its a basic operation that is being stupid. Please someone help me either figure out how to do what I want in the new version, or tell me how to make it where I can open it in the old version. I'm super frustrated and confused.

nevermind, figured out how to extract... the process from the old version to this version is more complex than needed, but that's okay. Still don't know how to convert the files. I would delete this post but I don't know how. Hours later, my frustration is gone. But thanks anyhow.
