Token License Timeout

A client of ours made the switch from multi-user licenses to token.  In the multi-user environment they used the options file to specify an inactivity timeout time to return a license should a user get up and walk away and leave their software running.  Now they want that functionality even more since they're on token licenses because they have users who may open the software to look at a drawing and then walk away leaving the software running all day, thus being charged a full token for only about a minute of actually using the software.  Is there a way to add a timeout variable to token licenses?

Thank you for any input,

as far as i know the options file does not work with the token license

i don't think there is a way to control this

this is all Autodesk says

Should I close a product when I’m not using it? What happens if I forget to close a product before leaving for the weekend?
Yes, close products you’re not using to avoid additional token charges. Tokens are charged once every 24 hours even if you are not actively using the product. It’s important to keep this in mind to avoid excess charges.

Thank you.  That's what I figured.  That's what I was afraid of.

For your Tokens licences are you using a FlexNet licence server? If so, the options file supports the timeout feature when on tokens.

Thank you, but token licenses don't utilize the FlexNet license server. They're more like a single-user license, but a company pays for them on a use-by-use situation.  If a user launches the software and leaves it open for (I think) 5 minutes or more they are charged a token for that day.  This is great for companies who may have a user get into the software only once in a while, but horrible if they have users that launch the software to quickly look at a drawing and then forget to close the software.

So the idea would be to have something in place that will automatically return the license should the software be idle for a specified time.  And, since there is no FlexNet license server managing this, I don't think it's possible.

Hi Jason, actually Tokens on Enterprise agreements do use Flexnet licence servers (we have since 2014), that's why I asked about if you were using one at the start of my reply.

However for you it looks like for single use tokens your question is valid. This is not good if there is not a timeout feature for single use tokens. I would ask your reseller (if you have one) to find out from Autodesk.

@mike.burke, LOL. . .I work for a reseller.  We just don't sell too many token licensed software as we do other types of licenses.  Unfortunately, there isn't too much out there on token licenses (at least that I found).  I approached here first before taking it to Autodesk because I was hoping for a quicker answer and from others who are actually using it.

No worries, I'll take it up the Autodesk tree and see what solutions they can offer, if any.

Thanks for all the input,
